The Dolphins lost their first game of the season to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, by the score of 23-18. This was a game that the Dolphins could have won, if they had been able to score a touchdown inside their opponents' 20 yard line. 4 times, the Dolphins got inside the 20 and came away with 4 field goals.

The inactive players for Sunday were QB Damon Huard, S George Teague (sprained ankle), FB Stanley Pritchett (knee), T Andre Johnson, G Mike Sheldon, T Brent Smith, and WR Lamar Thomas.

FIRST QUARTER:

The game started with the Dolphins receiving the opening kickoff. Qadry Ismail took the ball at the 2 and made a very nice return to the 38, but a holding penalty on Bracey Walker moved the ball back to the Dolphin 19.

From there, the Dolphins started by running Abdul-Jabbar for 3 yards on a play where the hole wasn't there, but he spun out to his right. On 2nd and 7, Marino tried to hit Abdul-Jabbar across the middle, but the umpire in the middle of the field ran into Abdul-Jabbar and the pass dropped incomplete. However, on 3rd and 7, Marino hit McPhail on the quick-out pass for 11 yards and a 1st and 10 at their 33.

On 1st down, the Dolphins again tried to run Abdul-Jabbar, but this time Packers' linebacker Brian Williams came through unblocked and nailed Abdul-Jabbar for a yard loss. On 2nd down, Marino attempted to hit Drayton for what would have been a short gain, but he dropped the ball and on 3rd down, Marino couldn't find McPhail on a pass that was nowhere near where McPhail was going. This left the Dolphins with 4th and 11 and they punted.

However, when Bill Schroeder took the punt at his 32, he made it back to the 36 before Dewayne Dotson hit him from his right, jarring the ball loose. Bracey Walker immediately dived on the loose ball and the Dolphins recovered at the Packer 36.

Starting from there, Abdul-Jabbar ran inside on 1st down for 4 yards and then outside for 7 yards on 2nd down to give the Dolphins a 1st and 10 at the Packer 25. On the next play, Marino hit Drayton on a crossing route over the middle for 13 more yards down to the Packer 12.

From there, the Dolphins ran Abdul-Jabbar for 2 yards to the 10 and on 2nd down ran Abdul-Jabbar again for what appeared to be 7 more yards down to the 3, but a holding penalty on Ed Perry negated the play and gave the Dolphns a 2nd and 17 at the Packer 19. Abdul-Jabbar again got the call for 4 yards, but again the Dolphins were penalized 5 yards for delay of game and they now faced a 2nd and 22 from the Packer 24.

When Marino finally got the play off, he managed to find Troy Drayton for 18 yards down the Packer 6, which gave the Dolphins a 3rd and 4. Marino then went to the shotgun and threw the ball into the endzone, but there was no one there but a Packer linebacker and Marino was lucky that the linebacker couldn't hold on the ball, because it sailed right through is hands in the endzone. After this play, the Dolphins faced a 4th and 4 and Mare' came in to nail a 24 yard field goal and give the Dolphins a 3-0 lead.

Instant replay showed that Marino had been trying to hit OJ McDuffie in the endzone, but McDuffie was knocked off his route by not one, but two illegal blocks, the last of which was very blatant in the endzone and almost knocked him down. The referees, however, ignored it or didn't see it.

At this point, I was starting to feel a little paranoid about the refs, because first the umpire broke up a Marino pass and now the uncalled pass interference. I felt better later when the same official broke up a pass from Favre.

The Dolphins kickoff went into the endzone for a touchback and the Packers came out from their 20. On 1st down, a 3 yard run by Levens was stopped by Zach Thomas and on 2nd down, the Packers again ran, but this time William Henderson could only get 2 yards to give the Pack a 3rd down and 5 at their 25.

On the next play, Favre hit Robert Brooks with a short pass, but Brooks was only able to get to the 29 before Terrell Buckley brought him down. This left the Packers with a 4th and 1 and they punted to Charles Jordan at the Miami 29, and he had a nice return all the way back to the Green Bay 47 before he was pushed out of bounds.

The Dolphins started at the Packer 47 with Marino going to McDuffie, who dodged a couple of tackles to get 10 yards down to the Packer 37 and a 1st down. Marion went back to McDuffie again on the next play, but he couldn't stay in bounds and the pass was incomplete. On 2nd and 10, Marino aimed at Brian Manning, but the ball was too high and Manning couldn't get to it and on 3rd and 10, Marino saw McPhail get behind his defender down the sideline, but tossed the ball just a little too far and it sailed just over McPhail's fingertips.

This left the Dolphins with a 4th and 10 at the Packer 37, but the Dolphins decided to go for it. Marino started in the shotgun and lofted a pass over the middle to Fred Barnett who was slanting in. The Packers' Rod Mullen got to Barnett too soon and was all over him as Barnett tried to catch the ball. The ball fell to the ground, but Mullen was called for pass interference and the Dolphins had a 1st and 10 at the Packer 24.

On 1st down, Abdul-Jabbar ran for 6 yards behind Webb and Sims to the 18 and on 2nd down, he ran again for 3 more yards down to the 15. However, on 3rd and 1 at the Packer 15, the Dolphins attempted to run right up the middle and there was nothing there. Abdul-Jabbar made a half hearted attempted to vault over the pile, but got nowhere and the Dolphins now faced 4th and 1 at the Packer 15.

It should be noted that on this play, the Packers' nose tackle Gilbert Brown was injured and sat out the rest of the game with an unknown knee injury. It's odd, though, because the Dolphins' running game was actually worse after Brown left the game.

On 4th and 1 at the Packer 15, the Dolphins lined up for a field goal attempt, but as soon as the ball was snapped, John Kidd, the holder, jumped up and sprinted to his right. He looked for someone to throw the ball to and there were two Dolphins downfield from him, but instead of throwing the ball, he ran forward and dove for a 1st down at the Packer 11.

On 1st down, the Dolphins again went to Abdul-Jabbar around the left tackle, but Dewayne Dotson couldn't sustain the block on linebacker Brian Williams and Williams got away to take down Abdul-Jabbar for a 3 yard loss. This left the Dolphins with 2nd and 13 at the 14 and a pass to Drayton was too low for him to catch. Then, on 3rd and 13, Marino tried to hit McPhail crossing the middle, but McPhail dropped the ball. However, he was covered well enough that he probably would have been tackled at about the 5 and it would have been 4th down anyway.

So, once again facing a 4th down inside the Packers' 20, the Dolphins once again settled for a field goal and a 6-0 lead.

Mare's next kickoff was taken at the 3 yard line by Schroeder, who ran it back to the Packer 28 yard line. On 1st down, Favre hit Mark Chmura with a short pass, but Zach Thomas slipped on the turf and Chmura made 12 yards on the play to the 40. Then Levens ran outside for 13 more yards to the Dolphin 47. Now, with a 1st and 10 at the 47, the Packers tried to set up a little screen pass, but with Bowens bearing down on him, Favre backhanded a little pass to Levens. However, the Dolphins were ready and swarmed over him for a yard loss.

At the end of the first quarter, the Dolphins lead 6-0 and had held the ball for 11:26 seconds.

SECOND QUARTER:

The 2nd quarter opened with the Packers having the ball on 2nd down and 11 at the Dolphin 48. Again, the Packers looked for Mark Chmura and again, the Dolphin defender - this time it was Anthony Harris - slipped and fell. Chmura made the most of the Dolphins' miscues and rumbled 24 yards to the Dolphin 24.

From there, on 1st and 10, the Packers ran Levens for 6 yards around right end to the 18 and then for 2 more yards around right end to the 16. Now facing a 3rd and 2, Favre showed again why he was the most valuable player in the league last year. Under pressure, he flipped the ball to Henderson, who was open and picked up 8 yards to the Dolphin 8. Now, with a 1st and goal, Favre passed to Henderson again and he gained 6 yards down to the Dolphin 2.

From there, Favre tried to hit Chmura, but Chmura dropped the ball, leaving the Packers with a 3rd and goal at the Dolphin 2. On the next play, the Dolphins called an all-out blitz, but that left linebacker Anthony Harris in one-on-one coverage on Packers receiver Antonio Freeman. Seeing the obvious mismatch, Favre just tossed the ball to Freeman who was just over the goal line and had half a step on Harris on the quick out pattern. This gave the Packers a 7-6 lead.

The kickoff was taken by Irving Spikes at the 10 and returned to the Dolphins 28. From there Marino hit Charles Jordan on 1st down on the quick out pattern for 12 yards to the 40. From there, the Dolphins tried to run Irving Spikes on the sweep to the right, but he was nailed in the backfield for a 4 yard loss.

Now, with a 2nd and 14 from their 36, the Dolphins again tried to run Spikes, but he only managed 3 yards, which didn't matter because Tim Ruddy was called for holding and the Dolphins were back to a 2nd and 24 from their 26. The next play was a pass to Manning that was way overthrown, but Manning had slipped on the play as he was coming back. It didn't look like he could have caught the pass anyway and possibly Marino was expecting him to go deep when he cut back upfield instead.

Now facing a 3rd and 24, Marino tried to hit Fred Barnett, but he dropped a low pass and the Dolphins punted. Kidds' punt went out of bounds at the Packer 27 yard line.

The Packers started from their own 27 with a little dump pass to Henderson, who gained 17 yards on a combination of nice running and some missed tackles by the Dolphins. Now, with a 1st and 10 at their own 44, Levens was stopped by Shane Burton and Derrick Rodgers after only a 1 yard gain. Then a draw to Levens was stopped by Barron Tanner after 3 yards and on 3rd and 6, Favre overthrew Robert Brooks.

So, on 4th and 6 from their 48, the Packers punted and almost managed to down the ball at the Dolphins' one yardline, but the coverage man slipped on the field and the ball rolled past him into the endzone for a touchback.

Starting with a 1st and 10 from their own 20, Marino hit McDuffie on an out pattern when McDuffie slipped and fell and then got back up on his knees to catch the ball just short of the first down. With 2nd and 1, Abdul-Jabbar ran for 3 yards and a 1st down to the 32. Then the Dolphins tried a little trickery, running Charles Jordan on the reverse, but it was well defensed by the Packers and Jordan only got 2 yards to the 34.

Now with 2nd and 8, Marino went to Barnett on the slant-in route, but Barnett was so well covered that he had to wrestle with Doug Evans for the ball. However, Barnett won the tug-of-war and the Dolphins had an 11 yard gain to the 45. On 1st down, Marino, under pressure, dumped the ball off to Bernie Parmalee, who took it 10 yards down to the Packer 45 for another 1st down. On the very next play, Abdul-Jabbar managed to get outside of the left end and with some quick changes of direction, gained 22 yards down to the Packer 23.

From there, Abdul-Jabbar ran again for 3 more yards on 1st down and Marino hit Barnett with a quick pass on 2nd down for 6 yards. Then, on 3rd and 1, Irving Spikes ran through a hole right up the middle for 4 yards and a 1st and 10 at the Packer 11 yard line. From there, on first down, Marino overthrew Fred Barnett on a timing pattern to the corner of the endzone. On 2nd down, Marino went back to McDuffie, but it looked like McDuffie slipped and the ball went over his head.

Then, on third and 10, Marino hit Barnett for 6 yards at the 5, but the Packers were alert and took him down there, forcing a 4th and 5 at the Packer 5 yard line. The 2 minute warning for the first half was given and then Mare' kicked a field goal to put the Dolphins ahead again, 9-7.

On the kickoff, Bill Schroeder returned from his 2 to the Packer 20, but an illegal-block penalty set the Packers back to their 10 yard line. From there, Favre hit Freeman for 9 yards to the 19 and then Henderson ran 7 yards to the 26 before Green Bay called their first timeout with 1:23 remaining in the half.

On the next play, Favre hit Brooks with a short pass of about 7 yards on the quick slant in, but it looked like Calvin Jackson had slipped and Corey Harris was slightly out of position and Brooks was able to use his speed to break away across the field for 48 yards before he was brought down at the Dolphin 26 by Shawn Wooden.

Now with 1:15 remaining, Favre hit Brooks at the Dolphin 17 for 9 yards and called the second timeout. The Packers now had 2nd and 1 at the Dolphins' 17 and Favre found Chmura open in the middle for 9 yards down to the Dolphins 8 yard line. The clock was running at 47 seconds now and on 1st down, Jason Taylor got a hand on Favre's pass and knocked the ball down at the line of scrimmage.

Then, on 2nd and goal from the 8, the Packers tried to pick on Buckley, by passing to Mayes, but Buckley defensed the pass and prevented the touchdown. Now, with 3rd and goal, Favre tried a pass to Henderson, but this time Anthony Harris hit Henderson right at the catch and the ball fell incomplete. Now it was the Packers who had to settle for a field goal and a 10-9 lead with 37 seconds remaining.

The kickoff went to Qadry Ismail at the Dolphins' 9, but he was well covered and taken down at the 22. From there, Marino went right to the shotgun and hit Charles Jordan for 15 right on the sideline. With only 22 seconds remaining, the Dolphins were now at their 37, and Marino tried to hit Jordan deep down the middle. Jordan was well covered and the ball was a little high, although Jordan almost made a spectacular one-handed grab.

Now, with a 2nd and 10 at their 37, Marino hit McPhail for 6 yards on a quick slant, but now with only 9 seconds remaining and the Dolphins only at their own 42, Marino attempted to go deep down the right side and either Jordan slipped or turned the wrong way, but the ball sailed way out of reach of any Dolphin and was intercepted by Mike Prior, who ran it back a few yards before he was tackled.

The first half ended with the Packers up 10-9, even though Miami lead in almost every other category and had made 3 trips inside the Packers' 20 yardline.

THIRD QUARTER:

Starting the 3rd quarter, the Dolphins kicked off and Bill Schroeder returned from the goal line to the Packer 19. On 1st down, Favre attempted to hit Brooks in the left flat, but the ball hit the umpire, who, by the way, was the same one who interfered with the Dolphins' pass in the 1st quarter.

Now with a 2nd and 10 at the 19, Favre tried to hit Chmura, but he dropped the ball in the middle. On 3rd and 10, Favre dropped back to pass but was flushed from the pocket when Gardener managed to reach out and swat Favre on the arm. Favre went right up the middle, but couldn't quite make the first down as he was dragged down by Jason Taylor. So with 4th and inches at the Packer 29, they punted.

Jordan took the ball at the Dolphin's 18 and slipped trying to return. However, even if he hadn't slipped, he was well covered and probably wouldn't have made any more than the 4 yards he got to the Dolphins' 22.

From the 22, the Dolphins ran Abdul-Jabbar for 2 yards on 1st down and went to the no-huddle on 2nd down and 8 from their 24. First, Marino hit McDuffie for 15 yards to the Dolphins' 39. Then, Charles Jordan came wide open on the sideline and Marino hit him with a short pass that Jordan ran over 30 yards before he was pushed out at the Packer 17 for a total gain of 43 yards.

The Dolphins now had another chance inside the 20, but a blitzing Leroy Butler caught Abdul-Jabbar in the backfield for a 4 yard loss on 1st down. Butler paid for that play by tearing a muscle and going out of the game. He would return later in the game, but he may have to have surgery and will probably miss some games for Green Bay.

Now facing 2nd and 14 at the Packer 21, the Dolphins tried a draw with Spikes for 4 yards and on 3rd and 10, Marino tried to hit Barnett in the endzone, but the ball was high and behind where Barnett had hooked back at the goalline, so the Dolphins once again were forced to settle for a field goal and a 12-10 lead.

The kickoff was returned from the Packer 1 by Avon Haden out to the 25 yardline, but an illegal use of hands penalty pushed the ball back to the Packer 15, where, on 1st down, Levens went behind his right tackle for 8 yards to the 23 and again on 2nd down, Levens went behind the right tackle for 2 more yards to give the Packers 3rd and inches at the 25. Favre took the ball for the quarterback sneak and gave the Packers a 1st and 10 at their own 25.

Then Favre dropped back to pass on the next play, but was under heavy pressure. He was almost sacked but scrambled and got the ball to Freeman who went out of bounds after a 21 yard gain to the 46. From there, a 1st down run got Levens 9 yards and a quick pass to Freeman got 8 more to give the Packers a 1st and 10 at the Dolphin 37.

On the next play, Levens tried to run but was caught by Tim Bowens in the backfield for a 2 yard loss, forcing a 2nd and 12. However, Favre hit Henderson with a short pass and after the Dolphin who had coverage slipped and fell, Henderson picked up 13 yards and a 1st down at the Dolphin 27. From there, Favre overthrew Mayes on 1st down, but hit Bill Schroeder for 8 yards on 2nd down and on 3rd and 2 at the Dolphin 19, hit Henderson for 2 yards before Henderson slipped and fell at the Dolphin 17.

This left the Packers with a 4th and inches, but a quarterback sneak gained them a 1st and 10 at the Dolphins 16. From there, on 1st down, Derrick Rodgers got around the Packers' left tackle and dragged Favre down from behind for the Dolphins' only sack of the game. Now facing a 2nd and 13 from the 19, the Packers ran Levens on a draw up the middle for 11 yards, but on 3rd and 2 at the 8, they couldn't quite get the 1st down as Levens was stopped about half a yard short as he tried to run it over.

This was a curious play because Dolphins' defensive tackle Tim Bowens was late getting in from the sidelines and almost didn't get into the play. But it was good enough so that they stopped the Packers and on 4th and a half yard to go, the Packers elected to kick the field goal and take a 13-12 lead.

On the kickoff, Qadry Ismail took the ball and returned it from the Dolphins 10 to the 33 for a 23 yard return. On 1st down, Abdul-Jabbar got stuffed for a 1 yard loss and on 2nd and 11 from their 32, Marino's pass was just out of reach of Drayton. Marino went back to Fred Barnett on the slant-in on 3rd down, but Barnett dropped a pass he should have had and the Dolphins were left with a 4th and 11 at their own 32.

The Dolphins lined up to punt, but instead of punting, the ball was direct-snapped to Bernie Parmalee. Parmalee ran up the middle and although it looked like there was some running room, Parmalee was taken down after only a 2 yard gain. This was the same play that the Dolphins ran successfully last year against Houston with Larry Izzo, except that that play netted 26 yards, while this one failed miserably.

This gave the Packers the ball on downs at the Dolphins' 34 yardline. The Packers wasted no time in going for the homerun ball, by throwing to Freeman down the sidelines. However, Freeman was well covered on the play by Corey Harris, who was injured on the play and the ball fell incomplete after being slightly overthrown. Harris would come back later in the game.

On 2nd and 10, however, Mark Chmura slipped into the middle of the field uncovered and Favre hit him for a 9 yard gain. With a 3rd and 1 at the Dolphin 25, Levens ran for 4 yards and a 1st down. Now with a 1st and 10 at the Dolphins' 21, Favre couldn't get the ball to Freeman and on 2nd down, pressure on Favre forced him to throw the ball away. The third quarter ended at this point, with the Packers up 13-12 and driving deep in Dolphins' territory.

FOURTH QUARTER:

The 4th quarter opened with the Dolphins blitzing Favre heavily on 3rd and 10 at the Dolphin 21. Favre had to get rid of the ball and his pass to Freeman was incomplete as it fell short. However, the Packers were able to get a 39 yard field goal and lengthen their lead to 16-12.

On the kickoff, Qadry Ismail took the ball at the 5 and returned it to the Dolphins 25. From there, on 1st down, Marino was pressured and dumped the ball off to Abdul-Jabbar, but he could barely get back to the line of scrimmage for no gain. On 2nd down, Marino tried to hit Manning on a comeback pattern on the left side, but the ball was apparently intercepted by Doug Evans and returned to the Dolphins' 18. The officials, however, ruled that Evans had interfered with Manning before the interception and that gave the ball to the Dolphins at the Packer 38.

While it was clear that Evans got tangled up with Manning before the ball got there, it looked as if he were going for the ball, so the call may have been questionable.

Nevertheless, the Dolphins continued on 1st and 10 from their 38 with a dump pass to Bernie Parmalee. The Packers were penalized again on this play for defensive holding and this gave the Dolphins a 1st and 10 at the Dolphin 43. On the next play, Marino tried to hit Jordan on the deep sideline route, but the ball was slightly underthrown and Tyrone Williams had good position. He actually almost caught the ball, but Jordan was preceptive enough to strip it away at the last minute to prevent the interception.

Now with 2nd and 10 at the 43, the Dolphins tried a screen pass to Abdul-Jabbar, but that only gained 2 yards and on 3rd and 8, Marino tried to hit McPhail, but it appeared that McPhail dropped the ball and forced the Dolphins to punt on 4th and 8 at their own 45. The Packers got an 8 yard return from Bill Schroeder, but there was a holding penalty on Green Bay, which pushed them back to their 17.

From there, the Packers hit Levens on an 8 yard screen pass, but that was nullified by an illegal block penalty and so the Packers were pushed back to a 1st and 18 at their 9. A quick pass to Robert Brooks for 12 yards to the 20 and a quick pass to Levens for 4 more gave the Packers a 3rd and 3 at their 24. Once again, however, Chmura got a quick pass from Favre and that 4 yards carried them to their 28 and a 1st downs.

Their next play was a sweep to the right for 3 yards, but Darryl Gardener made a late hit on Levens out of bounds and tacked on another 15 yards out to the Packers' 47 yardline. Favre's first pass from the 47 was incomplete to Freeman and a little dump pass to Henderson got them 6 yards to the Dolphin 47.

Now it was 3rd and 4 and somehow Anthonio Freeman got wide open and Favre hit him for 13 yards down to the Dolphin 35. At this point, the Packers ran Levens up the middle for 11 yards to the Dolphins' 24 and a first down. The Dolphins did stuff Levens on the next play, as Wooden got into the backfield to disrupt the play, but on 2nd and 10 from the Dolphin 24, Levens went 13 more yards through a huge hole up the middle down to the Dolphin 11.

After Henderson ran for only a 1 yard gain on 1st and 10 at the Dolphins' 11, Favre faced a Dolphins' blitz on 2nd and 9 at the Dolphins ten. He just flipped a short pass to William Henderson, who was off the Favre's left and had gotten all alone in the flat. Henderson took the ball and rumbled into the endzone untouched from 11 yards away.

Following the extra point, this gave the Packers a 23-12 lead. The kickoff sailed out of the endzone for a touchback with 5:22 left in the game. The Dolphins went immediately to the no-huddle offense and on 1st and 10 from their own 20, Marino hit Barnett on the sidelines but Barnett couldn't stay in bounds. On 2nd and 10, Marino tossed a little dump pass to McPhail, but he was dropped for no gain at the line of scrimmage. Then, on 3rd down, Marino found Brian Manning on a 14 yard slant in to the 34 for a 1st down.

On 1st and 10 from the 34, Reggie White finally got the better of James Brown and flushed Marino from the pocket. As he started to go down, he tossed the ball off to his left, but there were no receivers near the pass and Marino was called for intentional grounding. This put the Dolphins back to a 2nd and 22 at their own 22. Marino tried to hit Barnett on 2nd down, but he couldn't hold on and Marino went back to McDuffie on 3rd down, but he overthrew McDuffie enough to cause the incomletion.

On 4th and 22, Kidd punted to Bill Schroeder at the 39 and Schroeder returned it to the Packer 43 before being brought down. With 3:49 remaining, Favre handed off to Levens for 2 yards on 1st down to the 45. However, on 2nd down, as Favre tried to handoff to Levens again, they bobbled the exchange and the ball came loose in the backfield where an alert Dunstan Anderson fell on the ball for the Dolphins.

This gave the Dolphins a 1st and 10 at the Packer 35 with 2:56 remaining. On the first play, Marino went right to Barnett deep down the right sideline, but between the defensive back and Barnett, Barnett couldn't hold on to the ball and it fell incomplete. Whether Barnett just dropped the ball or the defensive back actually got his hands in there wasn't clear, but the ball was well thrown and Barnett had a chance at a catch.

On 2nd and 10, Marino hit McPhail on the left sideline for a quick 6 yards and on 3rd and 4, Marino found OJ McDuffie for 4 yards, but that wasn't quite enough and the Dolphins faced a 4 and inches at the Packers' 26.

At this point, the Dolphins were still using the no-huddle, shotgun offense and they ran the draw to McPhail to get 2 yards on the 4th down to the Packer 24 and get a 1st down. At this point, the 2 minute warning was sounded.

On the next play, Marino tried to hit Jordan, but the defensive back was screening Jordan and the ball litterally bounced off the defensive back's back and fell incomplete. On 2nd down, the Dolphins were penalized for a false start on McIver, but on 2nd and 15 from the 29, Marino was in the shotgun. After the snap, Marino scanned the field but could find no one open. He was forced to step up in the pocket and he ran forward and then rifled the ball to Charles Jordan, who was coming back towards Marino at the 5 yard line.

Jordan caught the ball and spun to his left at the 5, and then ran and dived the last few yards into the endzone for a touchdown. This narrowed the gap to 23-18, and the Dolphins elected to go for 2 points, but Marino's pass to Troy Drayton in the middle of the field fell incomplete. It appeared that Drayton had a defender all over him, but it's not clear whether that made him drop the ball or if he just dropped it.

With 1:47 remaining in the game and being down by 5, the Dolphins attempted an onsides kick. The ball was well placed by Mare', but a well-timed leap by Packer Terry Mickens allowed him to come down with the ball at the Dolphin 46 yard line.

At this point, the Dolphins had 2 timeouts left and if they had been able to stop the Packers, they might have gotten one more shot at the game, but the Packers were able to run Levens for 1 yard and then 7 yards to the Dolphins' 38 and on 3rd and 2, when the Dolphins were successful in stacking the inside of the line and closing the holes there. Levens bounced outside and gained 23 yards to the Dolphin 15. Then all Favre had to do was to take a knee and the Packers won 23-18.

Overall, the Dolphins played pretty well and were competitive in this game from beginning to end. However, they didn't accomlish what they had hoped to be able to do and that was to win the ballgame.
