Sep 06, 1997: -- Huard Signed; Crawford Released --
ESPN is reporting today that the Dolphins have signed
quarterback Damon Huard to the regular squad off their own practice
squad. To make room for Huard, they have cut linebacker Mike
Crawford.
Huard was brought in during summer camp to compete for the 3rd
quarterback spot with Spence Fischer. Huard won the job, but was
relegated to the practice squad when the Dolphins decided to keep 2
quarterbacks and let punter John Kidd be the emergency 3rd
quarterback.
Because of the peculiar nature of NFL rules, the Dolphins may
dress only 45 players on Sunday. However, if they dress a third
quarterback, that player doesn't against the 45 player limit, so Huard
may be on the sidelines against Houston tomorrow. If he plays,
however, neither the normal first or second string quarterback can
play after he has entered the game.
My Comments:
I'm sad to see Crawford go. I liked the kid, even though he
didn't play very well when inserted in place of Zach Thomas in the
preseason.
The signing of Huard seems to indicate that the Dolphins will
not be playing John Kidd at punter tomorrow and that Kidd will be
inactive. Without Kidd available, the team will need an emergency
quarterback available and that will be Huard.
What will probably happen next week is that Huard will be
dropped back to the practice squad and either Crawford will be rehired
or they'll sign one of the other practice squad players.
