** McDuffie Signs 4 Year Extension
WR OJ McDuffie has signed a 4 year contract extension with the
Dolphins that may turn out to be worth as much as $20 million,
according to various news reports that surfaced today. The Dolphins
have officially announced that McDuffie has signed the extension that
will keep him dressed in Aqua and Orange through 2004, but have not
announced any terms.
However, a variety of reports say that McDuffie's total
package is worth about $3.3 million per year for each year of his 6
year contract. According to JJ, that package will not provide the
Dolphins will much cap relief this year, but will guarantee that the
Dolphins' most productive receiver from the past several years will
stay in Miami.
** All Draft Picks Sign
The Dolphins officially announced today that they have signed
all of their draft picks to deals varying between 3 and 4 years.
James Johnson and Rob Konrad, both 2nd round picks, have each signed 4
year deals worth $2.65 and $2.45 million respectively.
The remaining draft picks have all signed 3 year deals for
minimum base salary each year with varying amounts of signing
bonuses. In addition, Cecil Collins has an unprecedented incentive
clause in his contract. Normally, 5th round draft picks don't get
incentive clauses, but Collins is no ordinary 5th round pick.
Also, Cecil Collins will not receive his entire $140,000
signing bonus in a lumped sum before the coming year as most players
will. Instead, Collins' signing bonus will be distributed each year
over his 3 year contract. This is supposed to be an incentive for
Collins to stay out of trouble while with the team.
In related news, the Dolphins have cut OL Justin Glasgow and
WR Todd Doxzon. Doxzon was waived injured and that means that if he
clears waivers, he could come back to the team on the
Reserve/Non-Football injury list.
My Comments:
The signing of McDuffie to an extension is certainly a good
deal for both him and the team and the $3.3 million price tag is not
out of line for a player who led the league in receptions. JJ is
correct - such a player should be rewarded.
The signing of all the draft picks on the day before camp,
while guaranteed to give me heart palpitations, is a relief. Now we
can all concentrate on football, instead of wondering who will report
to camp.
Has anyone noticed, by the way, that Edgerrin James is holding
out of the Colts' training camp? Just thought I'd mention it...
I was a little surprised and disappointed that they cut Todd
Doxzon, but if he clears waivers (and he might), they'll bring him
back and put him on the reserve list.
