Dolphins News: Ricky Sanders is a done deal
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Jul 09, 1995: -- Ricky Sanders is a done deal --
According to the latest issue of Pro Football Weekly (available
from ESPNet Sportszone), the Dolphins have completed the signing of
Ricky Sanders for an undisclosed amount. However, the deal was
originally reported to be for a minimal amount in range of $200,000
per year. This deal gives the Dolphins two ex-Redskin wide receivers
and adds to the depth of their wide receiver corps.
Sanders is a 10 year veteran with experience on two Super Bowl
winning teams. Last year, he caught 67 passes for 599 yards and 1
touchdown.
During his career, he has caught 481 passes for 6,453 yards and 37
touchdowns.
The Dolphins have also released cornerbacks Dexter Seigler and
Kwame' Smith. Seigler was on the practice squad last year and Smith
was an undrafted rookie free agent.
My Comments:
I reported before that the signing of Sanders was something of a
mystery to me, but I guess I see the sense of it now. With Miller and
Myers out for the year, Sanders is a proven backup who comes at a
bargain price and is a better bet than any of the undrafted rookies.
Plus, Sanders (and Clark, for that matter) both have extensive big
game experience in their Super Bowl years with the Washington
Redskins.
As long as his signing doesn't interfere with any other signings
that are necessary - say, on defense - it's a good addition to the
team.
