Nov 13, 1998: -- Buckey Placed on IR --
The Dolphins have placed offensive lineman Jeff Buckey on
injured reserve because of problems with his back, according to an
announcement from the team on Wednesday. Placing Buckey on IR means
that he will not be available to the team for the rest of the season.
This move leaves the Dolphins with an open roster spot on the regular
roster.
Buckey started most of last season at left guard for the
Dolphins and before the emergence of Mark Dixon last summer, was
considered to be a possible starter at that spot for this season.
Buckey has been receiving treatment for his back since this
past spring, and missed some training camp because of it. He was
active as a reserve player in the first 7 games of this year, but has
been inactive the last two weeks.
In non-related news, the Dolphins have signed offensive
lineman Chris Brymer to the practice squad. Brymer played college
football at Southern California and signed as a rookie free agent with
the Seattle Seahawks this spring, but was cut by them in August.
My Comments:
Buckey's principle duties have been as a backup and with the
emergence of Brent Smith, his loss is not particularly important. Of
course, that statement comes with a lot of "As long as"'s.
In other words, as long as Brent Smith and Mark Dixon stay
healthy and Brent Smith continues to improve, Buckey won't be missed.
As long as no other offensive lineman gets injured. As long as
Richmond Webb returns for the end of the season.
Overall, however, it looks like this is not a big problem for
the Dolphins.
