Oct 08, 1998: -- Todd Doxzon Signed --
** Dolphins Sign Doxzon
The Dolphins announced that they signed wide receiver and
quarterback Todd Doxzon to the practice squad yesterday. Yes, that's
right - he's both a wide receiver and a quarterback. The Miami
Herald referred to him as the Dolphins' "Slash" this morning. Wide
receiver's coach Robert Ford said "if he's not the dadgum fastest guy
we've got out here, I don't know who is".
During college, Doxzon played quarterback for Iowa State,
completing 244 passes for 3,158 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also
rushed for 1,045 yards and 14 touchdowns.
He spent last summer with the Jets, but was waived before the
regular season. He played with the Amsterdam Admirals this spring as
a wide receiver, catching eight passes for 135 yards and two
touchdowns in four games.
The Dolphins' official press release says that he was signed
as a quarterback, but it certainly doesn't hurt him to have some
talent as a wide receiver.
Also, the Dolphins have apparently re-signed cornerback
Raphael Ball to the practice squad after cutting him from the regular
roster two weeks ago to sign Ron Moore. While there was no official
announcement, the Dolphins have him listed on their practice squad
roster.
** Jordan To Miss Next Game
Charles Jordan will miss the Monday night game against the
Jaguars with a strained groin muscle that he re-aggravated in the game
against the Jets. He originally injured it in training camp, but had
recovered enough to play in the season opener against the Colts.
Now, however, it appears that the injury is very serious and
that he may have to have surgery on it. One report says that the
muscle is pulling away from the bone. If that's the case and he has
to have surgery, he will most likely miss the rest of the season.
As of now, no final determination has been made. However,
more will be known over the next few days.
In other injury news, Jason Taylor sprained his left wrist
against the Jets, but will be ready to play against the Jaguars on
Monday night. The only question is whether or not he will wear a cast
as he goes against the Jaguars' Tony Boselli.
My Comments:
The signing of Doxzon kills two birds with one stone - so to
speak. They get a quarterback and a wide receiver for the price of
one player. I don't think you'll see him on the regular roster
anytime soon, but it's an interesting combination.
As I recall, Tony Martin also played quarterback in college,
although the Dolphins never used him that way.
As for Charles Jordan - I hate to have to say it, but his
injury is no big loss. He has done absolutely nothing in the regular
season, other than fumble 3 times, and he won't be missed from the
lineup.
And that's a shame, because he had a good training camp and
has shown promise off and on every since he came to Miami. He's also
one of the fastest players on the team.
But while JJ may love speed, speed alone is not enough.
Now Horace Copeland will get a chance to play as he gets the
nod to fill in for Jordan. Copeland is coming along well in practice
and will take Charles Jordan's place on the depth chart. That will
most likely make him the 3rd wide receiver in the 3 receiver
formations.
