Sep 30, 1998: -- RB Ron Moore Signed --
The Dolphins signed running back Ron Moore to the active
roster today, waiving cornerback Raphael Ball to make room. Moore is
entering his 6th year in the league, having been originally drafted by
the Cardinals in the 4th round of the 1993 draft.
During his rookie year with the Cardinals, he had a very good
season, starting 11 games for them and finishing the year with 1018
yards on 263 carries for a 3.9 ypc average. He also scored 9 rushing
touchdowns that year. He started every game for the Cardinals in
1994, but his numbers went down and he only averaged 3.4 ypc and
scored 4 touchdowns.
In 95, he was traded to the Jets, along with some draft picks,
for Rob Moore. While he was in New York, he did virtually nothing for
them, starting only 4 games in 2 years. Last year, he went back to
the Cardinals, where he started 4 games, but only averaged 3.4 ypc and
was cut at the end of last season and cut again this summer out of
their training camp.
At 5'10" and 225 pounds, Moore is a little bowling ball type
of runner. He played his college football at Pittsburgh State, where
he gained 2,585 yards as a senior and was named a consensus
All-American in division II.
Also in the news, the Dolphins terminated the contracts of
CB Terry Billups and RB James Bostic from the practice squad and
re-signed OT Matt Reem to the practice squad.
My Comments:
The only reason I can think of for the the Dolphins to sign a
running back at this point is as a backup fullback for Stanley
Pritchett and perhaps a short-yardage specialist to run over some
linebackers. Moore is a good sized back and does have 5 years of
experience in the league.
Still, my immediate reaction to this signing is summarized by
the phrase "huh?".
I really don't know what JJ's thinking. Moore is not going to
start and he might not even play. There is no mention anywhere that I
could find that he has experience on special teams that might be
valuable. Moore had a fine rookie year, but that was 5 years ago and
it's been all downhill ever since.
I suppose that JJ might also want him for a blocking back, but
Moore's career has been mostly carrying the ball.
Well, I suppose that the month wouldn't be complete if JJ
didn't make at least one signing that caused me to go "huh?" and
scratch my head in wonder. This is this month's mystery signing.
