Aug 20, 1998: -- Bowens Signs --
The Dolphins have announced that Tim Bowens has accepted
Miami's one year franchise contract offer and will sign a one year
deal for this season. He is expected to report to camp tomorrow for
the first time in 1998.
The one year deal is the franchise player tender offer that
the Dolphins were required to make to Bowens when they designated him
a franchise player this spring. The deal will pay him $2.88 million
for the 1998 season, but he will be a free agent again next spring,
unless the team decides to keep the franchise tag on him.
If the team does keep the franchise tag on Bowens next spring,
the required contract offer next year will be more in the $5 million
per year range.
Bowens is not expected to play in this Sunday's game against
the 49ers, but should be ready for the final pre-season game against
the Packers in 10 days.
My Comments:
I'm a little surprised that they couldn't get a long term deal
done, but this is better than nothing. Next spring, the team will
have to decide between Bowens and Richmond Webb if they want to put
the franchise tag on a free agent.
That is, unless they can come to a long term deal with Webb
this fall and extend his contract.
Well, at least this is a little good news to go along with the
bad news about Yatil. Bowens will likely move into the starting
position ahead of Barron Tanner, unless he is grossly out of shape.
