Aug 11, 1998: -- Dutton Waived --
According to this evening's Internet edition of the Miami
Herald, the Dolphins have waived 6th round draft pick John Dutton.
The team felt that having 5 quarterbacks on the roster was too many
and that Dutton would not get the repetitions that he needed to
develop properly, so he was released.
JJ stated that Damon Huard has improved dramatically since he
joined the team a year ago and that Chad May has the arm to play in
the NFL. At this point, the competition for the 3rd string
quarterback spot is down to May and Huard.
JJ also spoke of the need for experience at quarterback and
Dutton had the least experience of any of the three.
In other news, it turns out the reports of Shane Burton's
injury have been greatly exagerrated. Both JJ and Burton stated that
Burton does not have another torn rotator cuff in his shoulder, but
that instead, he had sprained it a little last week. The original
rumor that Burton had torn his rotator cuff seems to have originated
with Drew Rosenhaus.
My Comments:
I am sorry to see Dutton go. I thought that he was a good
prospect who just needed some time to mature. He seemed capable of
delivering the ball well and he had good judgement in games.
However, he did not look good in practice yesterday and seemed
to be taking way too long to make his decisions about where and when
to throw the ball. When he did finally make up his mind, the passes
were OK, but he obviously can't stand back in the pocket forever
against a typical NFL pass rush.
Still, I had thought that they would at least keep him on the
practice squad. I guess JJ just decided it wasn't worth keeping him
around.
The training camp report for Tuesday will be delayed about
half a day, so I can attend the morning session on Wednesday.
