** Dolphins Cut Corey Harris
The Dolphins announced this morning that they have cut
defensive back Corey Harris. Harris was originally signed as a free
agent last spring to play safety for the Dolphins, but after starting
6 games for the team at safety last year, Harris was benched in favor
of George Teague.
This spring, Corey Harris was moved back to cornerback with
the acquisition of Brock Marion. Harris was expected to compete for
one of the starting jobs, but has not been able to unseat Sam Madison
or Terrell Buckley.
Harris also played on special teams, working his way into one
of the primary kickoff returning jobs by the end of the season.
JJ left the door open for Harris to return to the team, saying
this morning that "We may be able to bring Corey back. We feel like
Corey does an outstanding job on special teams and gives us depth, so
we may bring him back under a new contract. With the salary cap, you
have to look at a lot of different factors. "
** Yatil Green has Minor Surgery
The Dolphins' first round pick of 1997 has had his third knee
operation since coming to the team last year. After the scrimmage on
Saturday, Green had minor arthoscopic surgery to remove a torn portion
of the lateral meniscus cartilage in his knee.
This is considered minor surgery and Yatil is expected back on
the playing field in 2 weeks. He will miss the first two preseason
games against the Redskins and the Bucs.
My Comments:
The release of Corey Harris comes as a surprise, since he was
valuable for his experience as a defensive back and for his abilities
on special teams.
It's even more surprising considering JJ's implication that
his release had something to do with the salary cap. Right now, the
Dolphins have plenty of money available under the cap and there
doesn't seem to be a good reason to release Harris.
.... unless the Dolphins are planning on making some other
kind of offer to Tim Bowens that would stretch the cap this year.
That is sheer speculation on my part, as I have no information
that this is what the Dolphins are planning on doing and in fact, it
kind of goes against what JJ has been saying and it definitely goes
against what my various sources have been telling me.
Still - it makes you wonder, doesn't it?
I don't think that Yatil's surgery is anything to worry
about. It's nerve wracking, yes - but he'll be back in a couple of
weeks.
