Jul 22, 1998: -- Larry Shannon Out for Season --
In his first full practice with the Dolphins this morning,
wide receiver Larry Shannon tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his
right knee. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Shannon will probably be
placed on injured reserve and miss the entire 1998 season.
The injury occured when Shannon was running a pass route and
made a sharp cut on the practice field. "I was just running a route,"
Shannon said. "I stopped. I was trying to cut and my knee just
buckled."
Shannon was the Dolphins' 5th overall draft pick and the
second player taken by the Dolphins in the 3rd round. He was plagued
by ankle injuries in his senior year in college, but led the nation in
his junior year with a 21.4 yard per catch average.
According to radio news reports, Shannon will have surgery on
his ACL tomorrow and a determination will be made at that time whether
or not he will be out for the season.
My Comments:
The injury bug has come and bitten the Dolphins already this
year and while none of the players injured so far were really expected
to make a significant contribution to the team, the injuries have been
serious.
Shannon will most likely miss the rest of the year. While I
didn't expect him to start, or even to make the team, it's still a
damn shame.
But he's a tough kid and I expect that he'll be back next
year, ready to go in the spring.
And who knows - maybe he'll be able to heal well enough to
come back late in the fall. He was reported to have a decent range of
motion in his knee after the injury, so perhaps he won't be out the
entire year.
There was one report which indicated that the Dolphins were
looking at signing Randal Hill to take Shannon's place, but I don't
believe that. I think that the Dolphins will go with the wide
receivers that they still have.
Oh, I have one other comment to make:
AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
