Jun 03, 1998: -- Avery Returns To Practice --

** Avery Returns to Practice

The Dolphins' first round draft pick, running back John Avery, overruled his agent yesterday and returned to participate in field drills with the rest of the team. Avery's agent had been concerned about the possibility of an injury as contract negotiations for Avery entered a crucial phase, but after JJ's comments about Avery missing camp, the rookie decided it was in his best interest to participate and attended all the sessions on Tuesday.

Another player who attended training camp for the first time was defensive tackle Tim Bowens. Like Avery, Bowens had been sitting out of practice on the advice of his agent, but showed up on Tuesday to participate in some of the drills. It was the first time this season that Bowens had worked out with the team.

In other training camp news, free safety Brock Marion suffered a minor left groin strain during afternoon drills and had to sit out the remainder of the afternoon. The injury is not serious and he should be back today.

Trace Armstrong missed most of the day while suffering from dehydration and Terrell Buckley took the day off to take a test at Broward Community College.

It looks like cornerback Jerry Wilson may need more surgery on his knee. He has apparently developed a cyst on the knee that he had surgically repaired a few weeks ago and will need to have it corrected.

At the end of the day yesterday, JJ had praise for his wide receivers. He specifically mentioned Brian Manning and Larry Shannon as having good days, but he praised all the wide receivers as a group and stated that they should be much better this year.

** Dolphins Host Kickoff '98 Banquet

The Dolphins are holding their annual awards banquet tonight at the Signature Grand Hotel in Davie, Florida, beginning at 6:30 PM. Former NFL head coach and current CBS-TV game analyst Sam Wyche is the scheduled guest of honor. Awards for 1997 will be given out and JJ will preview the 1998 season.

This year's banquet is unique in that it will be broadcast live over the Internet and any interested fans with access to a computer and the Internet can watch and listen to the festivities on their computer. The Dolphins Endzone will be broadcasting live pictures on their WebCam and live audio direct from the banquet on their RealAudio server.

For more information on how to listen to and watch the banquet, visit the Dolphins Endzone Kickoff '98 Banquet web site.

My Comments:

The more I learn about John Avery, the more I like about him as a person. It remains to be seen if he has the physical tools to make it in the NFL, but he certainly seems to have the right attitude and that is much harder to come by that mere speed.

Tim Bowens also put in an appearance, although we'll still have to wait and see what happens with his contract negotiations. But I think that no matter what happens, he won't be sitting out this year.

The only other comments I have today concern Trace Armstrong. Dehydration occurs in 2 cases - when players don't drink enough (Duh!) and when they haven't been working out in the conditions enough. If Armstrong has not been working out consistently in the heat, he will definitely be in trouble in July.
