May 05, 1998: -- Brent Smith Has Surgery --
Brent Smith had surgery last Saturday to repair a tear in his
abdominal musculature as well as a small inguinal hernia repair.
According to the Dolphins' press release, he should be ready to
participate in training camp in July.
The Miami Herald is reporting that he may actually come back
before July and be ready for the next full team practice session,
which begins June 1st.
Between May 1st and June 1st, the Dolphins will hold 8 one-day
training sessions, where they will work on the new offense. The first
of these sessions was yesterday and the next will be on Thursday.
There is precious little information available about these
sessions, but because of NFL rules, the draftees will most likely not
be allowed to participate.
My Comments:
The news about Brent Smith is good and hopefully will mean
that he can seriously compete for a starting job this summer. As long
as he's back by the opening of training camp in July, he should be
able to compete on an equal footing with Jeff Buckey.
I wish that I could get a little more information on the
workouts going on between now and June 1st. They are not allowed any
serious contact, of course, but it would be nice to know who is on the
current starting roster and how they are adjusting to the new system.
If anyone hears anything, please don't hesitate to forward the
information to me. One of my best sources of information is the fans,
especially those in the Miami area.
