Apr 19, 1998: -- Lorenzo Bromell Taken in 4th --

With a pick obtained from Philadelphia, the Dolphins moved up in the 4th round to take defensive end Lorenzo Bromell from Clemson. To get to that pick, the Dolphins traded their 4th round pick and their #19 pick in the 5th round, still keeping their #20 pick in the 5th round.

Bromell is another Jason Taylor - a tall, fast pass rusher with an exceptionally quick first step off the ball. His production is more from speed and not so much from power. However, he is learning pass rushing moves and uses his hands well to ward off blocks and get to the passer.

He also has the ability to stunt and a lot of tenacity as a pass rusher. He doesn't give up if blocked and keeps working to attack and pursue.

Also like Taylor, there are questions about his raw strength and his ability to add weight and muscle to his body. He is also a little light on experience, having started his football at Georgia Military College. In 1997, he had 51 tackles, 31 solo, 13 tackles for a loss, 6 sacks and 15 quarterback pressures in 11 games.

My Comments:

I think I need to start doing my draft homework a little better. Dave Te Thomas rates this guy as a "Super Sleeper" with a huge upside and great potential. Initially, he will mostly be a pass rusher, but could graduate to an every-down defensive end.

With the pick of Mixon and now Bromell, JJ has addressed the Dolphins' biggest hole on defense - the lack of a consistent pass rush.
