Mar 23, 1998: -- Mike Chalenski Re-Signs --

The Dolphins announced today that they have re-signed defensive end Mike Chalenski to a 1 year contract for undisclosed terms. Chalenski was signed last fall in October after a series of injuries decimated the Dolphins' defensive ends. He played in 8 games for the Dolphins and had 6 tackles.

Chalenski is entering his 5th year in the league and his best season so far was in 1996, with the New York Jets, when he started 7 games for them at defensive end and recorded 29 tackles, one sack, a fumble recovery and a pass defensed.

The Dolphins also signed quarterback Stan White, who has been the perennial third quarterback for the New York Giants since 1994, when the Giants signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent. White has never played in a regular season game in the NFL, but played some last spring in the WLAF for the London Monarchs.

While he was with the Monarchs, he completed 62 of 131 passes for 676 yards, with 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions before being injured and being placed on injured reserve. This works out to a completion percentage of 47% and a quarterback rating of just 57.9.

White played his college ball at Auburn where he did set Auburn's collegiate career records in attempts, completions and total yardage.

My Comments:

Chalenski provided adequate backup last year to Trace Armstrong and, right now, is the only backup that Armstrong has at the left defensive end position. We know that JJ will be looking for someone else, but signing Chalenski doesn't hurt the team in any way and may help down the road.

Stan White is another matter, though. White will presumably come in to compete with Damon Huard for the 3rd quarterback spot, but the fact that he has done nothing in the NFL and that the Giants ( a team that is not exactly overflowing with quarterbacks ) have dumped him is an indication that he will be a waste of time.

Still, at this point in the season, that's the worst thing that you can say about him. I just would like to ask JJ why he thinks White might have a shot to make the team.
