Feb 23, 1998: -- Perriman Re-Signs --
ESPN is reporting this afternoon that the Dolphins have
re-signed wide receiver Brett Perriman to a one year contract for
undisclosed terms. Perriman was an unrestricted free agent who joined
the Dolphins last year after being cut by the Kansas City Chiefs early
in the season.
Last season, Perriman started in 5 of the 8 games he played
with the Dolphins and caught 19 passes for 309 yards and a touchdown.
He is a steady, if unspectacular receiver and has not been nearly as
successful with the Chiefs or the Dolphins as he was with the Lions,
where he caught 202 passes for 2509 yards and 14 touchdowns in his
last 2 years with them.
Perriman has already had two arthoscopic operations on his
knees since he's been with the Dolphins, but is supposed to be ready
to go in mini-camp in April. Where he plays this year will depend on
how well Yatil Green and Charles Jordan recover from injuries and on
who the Dolphins draft.
And the Dolphins have also announced the signing of punter
Klaus Wilmsmeyer, who was last seen playing for the New Orleans Saints
in 1996, to a one year contract. Wilmsmeyer does have a fair amount
of experience in the NFL, having punted in a total of 79 games in the
NFL for different teams, including a 3 year stint with the 49ers.
During his career, he has averaged 40.6 yards per punt.
Also in the news, the Cowboys are expected to announce this
afternoon that they have signed Dolphins' free agent Everett McIver to
a contract. McIver was the Dolphins' starting right guard last year
for 14 of it's 16 games, but has become expendable with the signing of
Kevin Donnalley.
My Comments:
I'm kind of ambivalent about the return of Perriman, because
the Dolphins already have a steady possession receiver in OJ McDuffie,
but you can't have too much depth on the team, especially at this
point in the season. At the very least, bringing Perriman back
provides depth at wide receiver and we all know how important that is,
especially after last year.
With the Dolphins signing Donnalley, McIver would have had to
fight for a starting job at left guard and the Cowboys have virtually
guaranteed him that he will be a starter. However, they're fooling
themselves if they think he's going to be a great addition to their
offensive line, especially since it looks like he's going to have to
try and fill Larry Allen's shoes.
Wilmsmeyer is one of those guys who plays around the league
for a lot of years, but is never very memorable. However, the signing
of a third punter may say that the Dolphins are not very confident
that they will get John Kidd back.
