Feb 17, 1998: -- Vikings Get Randle --
ESPN Sportszone is reporting this afternoon that defensive
tackle John Randle has agreed to a deal with the Minnesota Vikings for
$32.5 million with a $10 million signing bonus. $20 million of that
contract is guaranteed.
While the Vikings have not scheduled a press conference or
confirmed that any deal is definite, Randle's agent Gary Uberstine has
confirmed the terms and length of the deal with SportsTicker.
If the amount of the deal is correct, then Randle will be the
highest paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Randle had spent yesterday
in Miami, where the Dolphins had hoped to sign Randle to an offer
sheet, but he apparently left South Florida without agreeing to a deal
with the Dolphins.
Randle has said all along that he wants to stay with the
Vikings if they can match his asking price and that is apparently what
has happened.
My Comments:
This is a major disappointment for the Dolphins, who were
hoping that they could entice Randle away from the Vikings with a deal
that Minnesota couldn't afford to match. The addition of Randle to
the Dolphins would have significantly upgraded the Dolphins defense.
Assuming that the deal goes through as quoted, the Dolphins
will have a significant amount of money to spend on other free agents
and may make a push to sign one or two of the other available
defensive linemen, such as Tony Bennett of the Colts.
