Dec 09, 1997: -- Keith Sims Waived --
ESPN is reporting this afternoon that the Dolphins have
released former Pro Bowl guard Keith Sims. Sims, who has been with
the Dolphins since he was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1990 draft,
has started 108 games with the Dolphins had been named to 3 Pro Bowls
in his career.
This year, however, Sims fell into disfavor when he injured
his elbow and then didn't play as well as the team felt that he should
when he returned to the lineup. While he was injured, he lost his
starting job to second year man Jeff Buckey.
The Dolphins had signed Sims to a 5 year, $8.5 million dollar
deal in 1996, when he was a free agent.
In other news, the Dolphins also placed reserve tight end and
long-snapper Frank Wainwright on injured reserve with a torn pectoral
muscle. Ed Perry now handles the long-snapping duties for the team.
To fill the empty roster spots, the Dolphins have signed
cornerback Denorse Mosley from their own practice squad and have
signed safety Brian Walker, who was a free agent. Walker spent last
year with the Washington Redskins and started 4 games, but was waived
this year in October.
My Comments:
Well, in the immortal words of Freddie Mercury - Another One
Bites the Dust.
I guess we all knew that Keith Sims was going to be gone from
the Dolphins, but I don't think that I realized it would be so soon.
I figured that JJ would try to trade him in the off-season, but that
is too long for JJ to wait, I guess.
While Sims has not played well this year, I would have thought
that his added depth would have kept him on the roster at least
through December, but JJ doesn't play games once he's made up his mind
and I guess he had it made up.
Wow. Excuse me while I go find the liquor cabinet.
