Nov 16, 1997: -- Perriman To Start Against Bills --
The Dolphins have announced that Brett Perriman will make his
first start as a Dolphin when he takes Lamar Thomas' place at wide
receiver on Monday night.
Perriman was signed back on October 9th to help fill holes in
th Dolphins' receiving corps caused by injuries and the unexpectedly
poor play of Fred Barnett. He missed the first couple of weeks he
was with the team due to surgery on his knee, but has played well
since he played in his first game against the Bears.
He caught his first touchdown pass as a Dolphin last week
against the Jets. So far, with the Dolphins, he has played in 3
games, caught 6 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Lamar Thomas started 5 games for the Dolphins this season and
caught 12 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. He will continue to
play as the 3rd or 4th wide receiver in passing situations.
In other news, John Bock has been officially named as the
starter in place of Everett McIver at right guard and it looks like
Derrick Rodgers will not get to play at all on Monday night after all.
JJ said earlier in the week that Rodgers might get a chance to
play in pass rushing situations, but after a poor practice yesterday,
it appears that Rodgers will not get to play at all.
However, it continues to appear that Roosevelt Potts will get
some playing time this week. JJ has been impressed with Potts in
practice and wants to use him in selected situations on Monday night
against the Bills.
My Comments:
Lamar Thomas has played fairly well this year, but the switch
to Perriman is pretty clearly an improvement. While it doesn't give
the Dolphins a deep threat, it does improve that position pretty well
and gives the Dolphins two reliable starters, which they haven't had
in a while.
The news about John Bock is clearly bad news for Keith Sims,
who must start in order to justify his salary. If Sims doesn't work
his way back into the starting lineup by the end of the season, he
won't survive the off-season in Miami.
The news about Rodgers is bad, but I'd rather see him rest up
for the Patriots than risk his knee against the Bills. If the Dolphins
are going to make a serious run at the playoffs, Rodgers must be
healthy in December.
I like the fact that Potts will get to see some action on
Monday night. His 250+ pounds could help the Dolphins' running game a
lot, as long as he can pick up the offense quickly enough.
I hope that we will see Potts get to carry the ball in short
yardage situations.
