Nov 10, 1997: -- Potts Signs --
** Dolphins Sign Roosevelt Potts to one year deal.
The Dolphins announced this afternoon that they have signed
fullback Roosevelt Potts to a one year deal for undisclosed terms.
Potts was released by the Colts last week after seeing only limited
playing time this year.
Last year, Potts was suspended for the entire season for
substance abuse. According to one report, this suspension was for
alcohol abuse.
He was initially drafted in 1993 by the Colts and started 45
of the 49 games that he was active in 1993, 94 and 95. He was injured
in 1995 in the next to last game of the season and didn't play in the
final game that season.
He is listed as 6'0" and 251 pounds and played his college
ball at Northeast Louisiana. In his career, he has carried the ball
322 times for 1357 yards, which gives him a 4.2 yard per carry
average. He has also caught 73 passes for 668 yards and scored 3
touchdowns.
The Dolphins will have to cut a player to make room for Potts
on the roster, but as of this writing, that player has not been
announced.
** Derrick Rodgers Doubtful for Bills' Game
During his news conference on Monday afternoon, JJ stated that
Derrick Rodgers is doubtful for the Bills game next Monday night.
Rodgers hyperextended his knee on a play where he sacked quarterback
Glenn Foley of the Jets and suffered a sprain.
If Rodgers doesn't play against the Bills next Monday, Anthony
Harris will move to the weak side linebacking position normally
occupied by Rodgers and Dwight Hollier will fill in for Harris as the
strong side linebacker.
Also knocked out of the lineup for next week is guard Everett
McIver. He sprained his knee and will not require surgery, but will
not be able to play for 2 to 4 weeks. In his absence, Keith Sims
will most likely move back to left guard and Jeff Buckey will be asked
to fill in at right guard.
My Comments:
I think that the signing of Potts is a good thing. He may be
the power fullback that the Dolphins need to get that extra yard on
the ground in 3rd or 4th and short situations. His size alone speaks
to his potential.
The downside, of course, is that he may not be able to play at
the level that he did 4 years ago. Still, the Dolphins lose nothing
by giving him a tryout. At worst, they cut him at the end of the
season.
As to who will get cut, I would think that Mike Chalenski,
Qadry Ismail, Dewayne Dotson and Mike Crawford are the closest to
losing their jobs.
The news about Derrick Rodgers is bad. The Herald reported
this morning that Rodgers would play next Monday, but in this
afternoon's press conference, JJ said that it is "extremely doubtful"
that he will play.
BTW, if you have a realaudio player on your system, you can go
