Nov 07, 1997: -- Roosevelt Potts to visit Dolphins --
Fullback Roosevelt Potts, who was released by the Colts on
Tuesday was scheduled to visit the Dolphins today, according to a
report in the Sun-Sentinel. Potts is a former 2nd round draft pick
of the Colts, who has shown a lot of potential in previous years. In
1994, when Marshall Faulk had his best season running the ball, Potts
was the starting fullback and lead blocker for Faulk.
However, last year Potts sat out the season after being
suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy. This
year, after his return, he only played nine plays for the Colts and
eventually asked to be traded or released because he felt that he
didn't fit into the Colts' plans.
At 6'0" and 251 pounds, Potts is a big, bruising back. He is
currently in his 4th year in the league, having been drafted in 1993
by the Colts out of Northeast Louisiana. During his 4 years in the
league, he as rushed 322 times for 1357 yards and 1 touchdown. That
is a 4.2 yard per carry career average.
He started nearly every game for the Colts from 1993 to 1995
and in addition to his rushing, has caught 73 passes for 668 yards.
The Dolphins currently have no open roster spots and would
have to waive a player in order to sign Potts. His contract would
most likely be for the minimum league salary for a player of his
experience.
My Comments:
I was always impressed with Potts before he was suspended and
it could be that he is the big, bruising back that the Dolphins need
to provide blocking and get the short yards.
All this, of course, depends on whether or not he is in shape
and can still play like he used to.
Plus, he would have to learn the playbook.
If they do sign Potts, it would seem to me that players most
likely to be cut include Dewayne Dotson, Dunstan Anderson and Mike
Crawford.
Personally, I hope they sign him immediately. He certainly
wouldn't hurt the team by joining the lineup.
