Oct 06, 1997: -- Nedney Released --
The Dolphins have released kicker Joe Nedney today, just 3
days after they re-signed him to act as insurance in case Olindo Mare'
couldnt' play yesterday. Mare', however, recovered from last week's
hamstring pull very quickly and played well yesterday, putting three
out of four kickoffs into the endzone and making one field goal.
Nedney was the Dolphins' kicker last year, but was beaten out
for the job by Mare' this summer and has not been able to find a
kicking job in the NFL since then. He spent a brief period of time
with the Jets and has been floating around the league since then.
The release of Nedney leaves the team with 52 players and one
open roster spot with the trade deadline approaching. The deadline
for trading players is tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct 7th at 4 PM, EDT.
My Comments:
This move should surprise no one. The only question now is
whether or not the Dolphins will bring in someone to fill the empty
roster spot.
It's possible that the team could bring back John Kidd,
especially after Richardson's poor performance against the Chiefs
yesterday.
Of course, I'm not privy to any inside information, but it
seems unlikely that the Dolphins will execute any kind of blockbuster
trade before the deadline tomorrow. The Dolphins could use help in a
number of areas, but it's unlikely that any major impact players would
be available at a price that JJ would be willing to pay.
So if you're waiting for a major blockbuster trade, don't hold
your breath and don't get your hopes up. JJ may surprise us all, but
the odds are low.
