Aug 23, 1997: -- NFL Suspends Clayton Holmes --
The NFL has announced that it is suspending Dolphins'
cornerback Clayton Holmes for at least 4 games for violation of the
league's substance abuse policy. This suspension comes in the wake of
weeks of speculation about Holmes' testing positive for cocaine as
reported by the Miami Herald.
In all likelihood, this suspension will result in Holmes being
cut and may very well end his career in the NFL.
COMMENTS:
This suspension has me a little bit confused. I thought that
the NFL would suspend him for at least the entire season, but I guess
I don't understand the league's substance abuse policy.
Not that it matters, in any case. This suspension will be the
end of his tenure with the Miami Dolphins. His will be the first name
on the list of cuts tomorrow when the Dolphins announce their final 53
players on the roster.
And it's unlikely that any other team in the league will touch
him.
As to whether or not he's guilty or innocent, that has become
a moot point as far as the Dolphins are concerned. He was a
borderline player anyway and was in danger of being cut regardless of
his status with the NFL. Now that the NFL has made it's decision
(which they obviously took their time over), his career is over.
