Jul 18, 1997: -- Yatil Green Injures Knee Severely --
The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that the Dolphins
first round draft pick, WR Yatil Green, damaged the Anterior Cruciate
Ligament in his right knee during Thursday practice and will need
surgery to fix it.
The injury is severe enough that Green will definitely be out
for an extended period and may be out for the entire year.
The injury occurred when Green was running a deep pattern down
the sideline against cornerback Tim Jacobs and tried to come back to
catch a pass that was underthrown by quarterback Spence Fischer. His
cleat caught in the grass as he twisted back to the ball and that's
when he injured his knee.
According to the Herald, Green let out a scream that could be
heard across the entire field.
The injury leaves the Dolphins with 8 healthy wide receivers
on the roster after WR Kirby Dar Dar went down with an injury on
Sunday and virtually assures Charles Jordan the job of the third wide
receiver in the Dolphins lineup.
It also increases the possibility that one of the other
rookies will make the team.
My Comments:
Naturally, my initial reaction is...
AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
How could this happen! Things were going so well and now THIS!! How
could this happen?
There, now, I'm over my initial flood of agony and rational
thought is starting to set it. And now that I think about it, the
truth is that the injury doesn't seem like that big a deal for the
team.
Oh, it's bad for Green, alright, but the reality is that he
wasn't going to be a starter this year anyway and while the team could
have used him, I don't think he would have contributed all that much
this year.
The real problem is that this sets his whole development back
almost a year and means that he will effectively start next season as a rookie.
So it's not as big a problem as losing Dan Marino for the
year and I don't think that the team's final standing will be
affected by his loss.
Still, I feel compelled to say, just one more time....
AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
