Jul 02, 1997: -- Buckley Gets Extension --
The Dolphins have signed CB Terrell Buckley to a 2 year
contract extension that should keep him a Dolphin through the year
2000. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but his extension
will undoubtedly free up cap room for the team this year.
With that cap room, the Miami Herald is speculating this
morning that the Dolphins will attempt to re-sign Steve Emtman, who
was cut by the Dolphins earlier this year because he wanted too much
money. The Dolphins have made a number of attempts to strengthen
their defensive line this spring, but so far have not been able to
sign any free agents.
Also in the news - the Dolphins Endzone is reporting in their
pre-training camp press release this morning that the Dolphins have
not signed draftees Brent Smith, Barron Tanner and Hudhaifa Ismaeli. I
reported earlier that the Dolphins had signed these three players, but
that was apparently an erroneous report.
My Comments:
The Dolphins still have a few holes on the defensive line that
could be plugged and Steve Emtman is still a decent, if unspectacular
player that could help out there.
I'm glad that the Dolphins have opted to keep T-Buck. I know
that he isn't exactly the most universally loved player on the team,
but I think that he's gotten a lot of unfair publicity and criticism
concerning his play.
More than his value as a player on the field, I think that
he's a big asset to the team off the field. His efforts in recruiting
this Spring were instrumental in bringing a number of free agents into
Miami, including George Teague and Corey Harris.
