Jun 13, 1997: -- Yatil Green Signs; Marino Extends --
ESPN is reporting this afternoon that WR Yatil Green, the
Dolphins first round draft pick, has signed a contract for undisclosed
terms. According to a report in this morning's Herald, that contract
should be worth about $6.25 million over 5 years including a $3 million
signing bonus.
In order to make it easier to sign Green and the other
rookies, QB Dan Marino has signed a contract extension for 1 year,
through the 1999 season. This will lower his impact against the
salary cap for 1997 while possibly prolonging his career.
As far as I can determine, Yatil Green is only the second 1st
round draft choice of the 1997 draft to sign a contrtact with his
team. The first was Philadelphia's rookie defensive lineman.
Also signing a contract this afternoon was 6th round draft
choice TE Ed Perry from James Madison. Again, terms of Perry's deal
were undisclosed, but as a 6th round pick, Perry will receive the
rookie minimum plus a minimal signing bonus of between $50,000 and
$60,000. Perry's contract is for 3 years.
My Comments:
Signing the first round draft pick is always a good milestone
in the team's season and the Dolphins have signed him well in advance
of training camp, which is scheduled to being July 8th.
Also significant is Dan Marino's willingness to restructure
his contract to allow JJ enough leeway to sign the draft picks.
It looks like we're off to a good start.
