Jun 11, 1997: -- 3 Draftees Sign --
Depending on who you believe, the Dolphins signed either 3 or
4 of their draft picks yesterday, but unfortunately, WR Yatil Green
was not one of them.
The Miami Herald and ESPN are reporting this morning that the
Dolphins have signed OL Jerome Daniels, LB Mike Crawford and DE
Nicholas Lopez to 3 year deals yesterday. In addition,
the Sun-Sentinel is reporting that TE Ed Perry has also signed a
contract.
Even though terms were not disclosed for these contracts,
since last year's rookie salary pool hasn't changed, they all probably
got minimum salary contracts and a signing bonus. According to the
Sun-Sentinel, Crawford received a signing bonus of $53,000, while
Perry got $52,000.
Daniels was the highest player signed, being taken in the 4th
round, while Crawford, Lopez and Perry were all taken in the 5th or
later rounds.
In other rookie negotiations, the Dolphins are still talking
with all their rookies and expect LB John Fiala and WR Brian Manning
to sign contracts in the next few days.
Also, the Dolphins waived WR Daryl Frazier yesterday. Frazier
was signed as an unrestricted free agent in the off-season from the
CFL.
And, in other NFL news, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have waived
WR Alvin Harper for salary cap reasons. Harper was signed for big
bucks two years ago by the Bucs to help revive their anemic offense,
but he has not produced at all while in Tampa.
My Comments:
It's good to see the draftees starting to sign contracts, but
none of the contracts that were signed were particularly difficult to
complete. All were probably for the minimum and the only bargaining
point would have been the size of the signing bonus.
Hopefully, now that the Eagles have signed their first round
pick, that will take some of the pressure off Green and his (*ahem*)
agent.
And don't expect much to come from Alvin Harper's release.
While JJ did like him when he was with the Cowboys, the Dolphins have
a lot of decent receivers and don't need Harper.
