*** IMPORTANT ***
Before I start with the news, let me apologize for the outage
of the last 5 days. Apparently, my ISP (phins.com) was
experiencing serious technical difficulties that has kept them from
being able to talk to the Internet. I could dial in, but could not
get from their server to the rest of the Internet.
This outage affected my Web Page, both mailing lists and my
access to Usenet News. As of right now, it appears that most of the
most serious problems have been solved, but there may still be some
lingering difficulties.
For future reference, an alternate way of reaching me via
email is to send email to my work address at Curtis.Fennell@fmr.com.
I would prefer that you not use this address for routine
correspondence, but if you can't reach me any other way, please feel
free to email me there.
And now, the news...
** Lamar Thomas Released
Dolphins WR Lamar Thomas was released from jail on Tuesday,
after a Broward count circuit judge said that there was not enough
evidence to keep him locked up.
Thomas was initially jailed after a March 29th incident, in
which he was charged with beating his fiance, Ebony Cooksey. Even
though Cooksey refused to press charges against him, he was kept in
jail for 19 days on suspicion that he violated his probation from his
earlier conviction of battering Cooksey last summer.
Thomas will not face any further penalties for this incident,
but will be monitored more closely during the remainder of his
probation and the judge has ordered that Thomas change the agency
where he will attend batterers counseling, which he has yet to start.
** AJ Johnson and Tyrone Williams Waived
The Dolphins announced on Monday that they had waived
cornerback AJ Johnson and wide receiver Tyrone Williams, bringing the
roster down to 85 players.
Johnson was signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie free
agent immediately after the draft, but was unable to participate in
most of mini-camp because of a stomach virus that he contracted.
Williams was signed in February as a free agent after having
played last year in the CFL, where he had a decent season. However,
he became expendable with the signing of Lawrence Dawsey and the
drafting of Yatil Green and Brian Manning.
** Marc Lillibridge is WLAF player of the week.
The WLAF named Dolphins linebacker Marc Lillibridge as their
defensive player of the week last week for a 14-tackle performance
with the Amsterdam Admirals. He also recovered a fumble, forced a
fumble, defensed two passes and returned an interception for a
touchdown.
Lillibridge was signed last year by the Dolphins and spent
most of the season on the team's practice squad. He was sent to the
Admirals by the Dolphins in the off-season and now leads the Admirals
with a total of 41 tackles.
My Comments:
Perhaps Thomas will finally get the counseling and treatment
that he needs. I have mixed feelings about keeping him on the team,
but I'm reasonably certain that I won't have to worry about that much
longer. I'll be very surprised if he's still on the team in
September. Heck, I'll be surprised if he's still on the team in
August.
I feel a little bad for AJ Johnson. He get's sick and can't
compete and then he's cut. Perhaps he'll have a chance to sign up
with another team.
Marc Lillibridge is a nice surprise. It will be interesting to
see if he can compete for a position on the team with all the other
linebackers that JJ has on the roster, but he's certainly putting on a
show with the Admirals.
