Mar 27, 1997: -- Dolphins get 3 extra picks --
The NFL announced today that they had awarded the Dolphins 3
compensatory picks in the 1997 draft for the players that the Dolphins
had lost last year due to free agency. According to a report from the
Associated Press, the 3 picks are all in the 3rd round.
The 3 additional picks give the Dolphins a total of 10 picks,
all in the first 6 rounds. The Dolphins traded one of their 5th round
picks to the Jets for OT James Brown last spring. They also traded
away their 7th round pick in this draft for extra draft picks in the
1996 draft.
However, the Dolphins traded Terry Kirby to San Francisco for
a 4th round pick this spring and traded Pete Stoyanovich to the Kansas
City Chiefs for a 5th round pick.
As near as I can tell, this leaves the Dolphins with the
following draft picks in the 1997 draft:
1 - 1st round pick (#15)
1 - 2nd round pick
4 - 3rd round picks (includes 3 compensatory picks)
2 - 4th round pick (includes San Fran's 4th round slot)
1 - 5th round picks (Kansas City's 5th round slot)
1 - 6th round pick
10 - Total picks
Typically, compensatory picks are at the end of the round,
which would put them in range of picks from numbers 90 to 100.
Last year, the Dolphins' most productive round was actually
the 5th round, where they picked up Zach Thomas, Jerris McPhail and
Shane Burton. In the 3rd round, the picked Dorian Brew and Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar.
My Comments:
It looks as if the Dolphins got all they were looking for in
the 3 compensatory picks. Last year, JJ started with 8 picks and
parlayed them into 12 total picks. This year, he's already starting
with 10, so it's anyone's guess what the Dolphins could end up with
this year.
There is at least one area in which the Dolphins are a lot
more exciting than they were in the Shula era - on draft day, the
Dolphins are now a lot more exciting to watch than they used to be.
