Mar 21, 1997: -- Lawrence Dawsey Agrees to Terms --
The Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel is reporting this morning that
the Dolphins have reached agreement on a 2 year deal with free agent
wide receiver Lawrence Dawsey, formerly of the NY Giants. The deal
can reportedly be worth up to $1 million with incentives.
Dawsey spent last year on the New York Giants, where he caught
18 passes for 233 yards. Before that, Dawsey spent 5 years with the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where his best season was his rookie year.
During that year, Dawsey caught 55 passes for 818 yards and 3
touchdowns. He was named to several all-rookie teams that year.
Originally drafted out of Florida State by the Bucs in the
third round of the 1991 draft, Dawsey was playing very well in the NFL
until he injured his knee in October of 1993 and spent the rest of '93
and the first part of 1994 recovering from his injury.
He was cut by the Bucs in 1996 and signed by the New York
Giants.
My Comments:
A mystery signing by the Dolphins. Dawsey was a great rookie,
but has gone downhill ever since and hasn't contributed much since his
second year in the league.
Admittedly, the Bucs and last year's New York Giants are not
the best places for wide receivers to shine, but it sill seems as if
the Dolphins are signing a player who is, at best, a journeyman in a
position of need. And while they are having cap problems, to boot.
The result of this would seem to be that Randal Hill is
history and the possibility of re-signing Scott Miller just became
near zero.
