Mar 17, 1997: -- Stubbs May Sign with Dolphins --

The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that Danny Stubbs has made significant progress in contract talks with the Dolphins and a contract could be signed as early as today. Apparently, the team and Stubbs moved much closer over the last few days and it looks as if a 3 year deal is in the works that will keep Stubbs in Miami.

Stubbs is an unrestricted free agent and was seeking about $1 million in salary this coming year. Last year with the Dolphins, he had 47 tackles, 9 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 pass defensed.

Also, safety George Teague is expected to make a decision today about whether or not he'll accept the Dolphins' offer. He's also had offers from Dallas and Baltimore, but Miami is supposed to be his first choice.

And last, but not least, cornerback Corey Harris, who agreed to terms with the Dolphins last week, is expected to sign today. His $4.5 million deal includes a $1.8 million signing bonus.

My Comments:

The reason that the Dolphins are looking to sign Stubbs is not that he is such a great defensive end. The reason is that they don't have anyone else and are not likely to get anyone at a decent price.

Personally, my feelings are that he is the best available choice for the money that they will pay him.

If George Teague chooses to sign with the Dolphins, he will probably make the starting lineup as the free safety. If he doesn't sign, Shawn Wooden will probably move back to free safety.
