Mar 13, 1997: -- Contract Offered to George Teague --

** George Teague Offered a Contract

According to a report in this morning's Miami Herald, free agent George Teague has been offered a contract by the Dolphins for 3 years at about $700,000 per year. This offer is less than the Baltimore Ravens have offered Teague ($900,000 a year), but Teague has said his first choice is Miami.

The Dolphins have told Teague's agent that they expect an answer by Monday night. If Teague signs with the Dolphins, he will compete with Shawn Wooden for the starting free safety slot, with Corey Harris now expected to take over at strong safety.

** Update on Corey Harris

I reported yesterday that the Dolphins had signed Corey Harris, which is how ESPN reported it on Wednesday. However, it now appears that Harris has not actually signed, but rather has just agreed to terms. He is expected to sign by Monday.

** Other Free Agent News

The Dolphins have also agreed to terms with free agent tight end Walter Reeves, who was with the San Diego Chargers last season and has been in the NFL for about 8 years. Reeves will back up Troy Drayton and is expected to be used as a 2nd tight end when the Dolphins go to a 2 tight end set - something that we will see more of this coming season, according to the Herald.

Reeves was initially drafted by the Cardinals in 1989 in the 2nd round and spent 5 years with them before going to Cleveland for 2 years and then on to San Diego last year. He's not much of a pass catcher - his best receiving year was in 1990 when he caught 18 passes - but he is supposed to be a decent blocker. Last season, he caught one pass for 3 yards.

Also, defensive end Ernie Logan may be offered a contract by the Dolphins. Apparently defensive line coach Gary Godette has a relationship with Logan from college and likes the speed on the big (288 lbs) man. However, the Jets also want Logan and are trying to craft a deal that the Dolphins won't want to match.

** Negotiations With Tim Bowens Begin

The Dolphins have started negotiations with defensive lineman Tim Bowens on a contract extension. Bowens' contract with the Dolphins runs out after next year and the Dolphins want to get him an extension before he becomes a free agent.

My Comments:

Signing George Teague would probably help the Dolphins' secondary and shore up the safety position, but it's unclear right now whether or not this will happen. However, if it did happen, that would pretty much end the quest for defensive backs for the team (for this season anyway) and clear up the draft picture.

Reeves' signing would end the tenure of Brett Carolan with the team and hopefully improve the run blocking. It also ends the quest for a solid backup at tight end.

The negotiations with Tim Bowens are very smart. Getting Bowens, who is arguably the Dolphins' best defensive lineman, to sign a contract extension soon would certainly reduce the tensions for next season.
