Feb 24, 1997: -- Clayton Holmes Signed --
According to a report from ESPN this evening, the Dolphins
signed former Cowboys cornerback Clayton Holmes to a contract today
for undisclosed terms. Holmes was released by the Cowboys last
February after being suspended for one year in November 1995 after
testing positive for cocaine.
Holmes was originally drafted by the Cowboys back in 1992 and
played for 3 years with them before being suspended by the NFL. He is
a very fast player, having once clocked a 4.23 in the 40, but he never
was able to crack the starting lineup in Dallas on a consistent basis.
He has been a perpetual backup for his career.
Holmes is another small defensive back, at 5'10" and 181 lbs.
In addition to playing defensive back, Holmes has experience returning
punts and kickoffs.
My Comments:
Obviously, Holmes is a gamble, because if he's caught taking
drugs again, he's out of the league. However, he is a very fast
defensive back and he could help out, both on pass defense and on
special teams - as long as he can stay clean.
JJ's discipline will probably be good for Holmes and Holmes
knows it, which is probably why he signed with the Dolphins instead
of the Cowboys.
