DOLPHINS NEWS:
The Dolphins announced yesterday that they have waived
center/guard Cal Dixon and replaced him on the roster with cornerback
Jerry Wilson, who was on the practice squad. Dixon, who was signed by
the Dolphins in the spring as a free agent from the Jets, was injured
for most of training camp and has played very little this season.
Jerry Wilson was signed to the Dolphins practice squad last
week and played his college football at Southern University. He was a
4th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1994 draft.
Wilson, at 5'10" and 185 lbs, was originally slated to play nickel
back for the Bucs this year, but was released during training camp.
The Dolphins also signed running back Brandon Bennett (5'11",
203 lbs) to the practice squad to take Wilson's place. Bennett was a
teammate of Stanley Pritchett at South Carolina and averaged 133 yards
per game rushing in 1994, but otherwise I haven't been able to find
out much about him.
In other news, it now appears that Jerris McPhail's injury is
less serious than first reported. While it's true that McPhail did
break his wrist when Keith Sims fell on him during Sunday's game
against the Patriots, it now appears that he will miss the next three
games and then be able to return.
The Herald is currently reporting that he will not have
surgery on the wrist, but will wear a cast to allow the wrist to
heal.
In his absense, running back Bernie Parmalee will be the
designated third down back.
Also on the "walking wounded" list after the game with the
Patriots are defensive lineman Daryl Gardener, who sprained his
shoulder, defensive lineman Tim Bowens, who suffered a left elbow
contusion and defensive end Trace Armstrong, who bruised some
ribs. None of these injuries is serious enough to keep these guys out
of the lineup next Sunday.
My Comments:
To place a Bucs castoff on the active roster is not a good
sign. It means that the Dolphins' coaching staff thinks that they
need help - any kind of help - in the defensive secondary.
Also, the release of Calvin Dixon leaves the Dolphins
completely without an experienced backup center. At this point, the
only guy available to play center if Ruddy gets hurt is Jeff Buckey, I
believe.
The news about McPhail is good, and Parmalee will finally get
some playing time this year. Actually, McPhail was probably pretty
lucky. I know that if Keith Sims fell on me, I know I'd have a lot
more to worry about than a broken wrist. And maybe Bernie can help
bring this team out of it's slump.
