Oct 07, 1996: -- McDuffie Gets Contract Extention --

DOLPHINS NEWS:

The Dolphins announced Saturday that they have signed WR OJ McDuffie to a 4 year contract extension worth about $8 million. McDuffie's contract was up at the end of this season, but this deal will keep him in Miami through the year 2000.

McDuffie also managed to get a signing bonus worth about $2 million. He is the 4th Dolphin player to get a contract extension in the past week, along with Tim Ruddy, Sean Hill and Calvin Jackson.

According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are also trying to get contract extensions with DT Tim Bowens, RB Irving Spikes, OL Chris Gray and newly acquired TE Troy Drayton.

In other news, the Dolphins announced the following injuries after the Seattle game on Sunday: OT James Brown has a right hamstring strain, DT Steve Emtman has a left hamstring strain and QB Craig Erickson has a bruised knee.

And in the rumor department, don't be surprised if the Dolphins make a serious play for acquiring DE Antony Smith of the Oakland Raiders. According to certain sources in Miami, JJ is still pursuing him.

My Comments:

With McDuffie being the only receiver on the team with significant experience catching Dan Marino's passes, it certainly makes a lot of sense to do everything necessary to keep him in Miami and I applaud the signing.

As far as the other players being offered extensions are concerned, the only one who may be controversial is Chris Gray. I know it will drive some of you crazy to think that Gray may be with the team for a few more years, but rest assured that having Gray under contract will not keep JJ from looking for other talent at that position.

At this point, if you don't think that JJ will trade or release just about anyone who doesn't measure up to his standards, then you haven't been paying attention to the team this year.
