DOLPHINS NEWS:
The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that the Dolphins
will sign QB Craig Erickson to a 2 year, $1 million deal today that
will make him the third QB on the roster behind Dan Marino and Bernie
Kosar.
Erickson, a former University of Miami player under coach
Johnson, had played last season in Indianapolis before he was replaced
as the starter by Jim Harbaugh. As a Colt last year Erickson was 50
of 83 with 3 TDs and 4 INTs.
The Colts had signed Erickson from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
where Erickson had played from 1992 to 1994. His best year as a pro
came in 1994, when he completed 225 of 399 passes for 2919 yards, 16
TDs and 10 INTs. That works out to an 82.5 QB rating.
In other news, CB Calvin Jackson sustained minor cartilege
damage to his knee in the game against the Patriots on Sunday, but
will not require surgery and may only be out for the coming week. An
MRI on Sunday night revealed that his injury was minor and his status
is listed as day-to-day.
Also sustaining a minor injury on opening day was DT Daryl
Gardener, who sprained his ankle, but will not miss any playing time.
My Comments:
Erickson is an interesting pickup because it may be that JJ is
looking to Erickson to be a potential starting quarterback of the
future after Marino retires. For his part, Erickson has basically
accepted the same deal from Miami that he rejected from the Colts.
The other question, of course, is who will be cut to make room
for Erickson on the roster. The prime candidates include LB Anthony
Harris, OG Everett McIver, DT Norman Hand and CB Tim Jacobs. My money
is on Jacobs.
