Dolphins News: Johnny Mitchell NOT Signed - Yet
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Jul 12, 1996: -- Johnny Mitchell NOT Signed - Yet --
ESPN was reporting late last night that the Dolphins had
signed former Jet's tight end Johnny Mitchell to a contract for
undisclosed terms. Mitchell was released this spring by the Jets in a
salary cap move.
However, the Miami Herald is reporting this morning that there
is no deal on Mitchell. According to the Herald, the reports of the
deal were false. Apparently, the Dolphins are having trouble figuring
out a way to sign Mitchell and keep the team under the salary cap.
Last year, Mitchell was third on the Jets in receptions with 45
catches for 497 yards and 5 touchdowns. However, his 5 scores lead the
team in touchdowns.
Mitchell is now in his 5th season in the league, having spent
his entire career with the Jets after being drafted by them in 1992.
He has great talent, but has a reputation for not using it as well as
he might.
My Comments:
I guess the moral of the story is not to believe everything
you hear on ESPN.
