Dolphins News: Hand and Heller have surgery
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Apr 30, 1996: -- Hand and Heller have surgery --
The Dolphins have announced that defensive tackle Norman Hand
has had arthoscopic knee surgery to remove some "loose bodies" from
his right knee. Hand, who was a 5th round pick last year but didn't
play in any games, is expected to be ready for Training Camp in July.
Also in the news, offensive tackle Ron Heller had arthoscopic
surgery today to repair his right shoulder. He is also continuing
rehabilitation on both knees after surgery to repair cartilege damage
last season.
My Comments:
There have been some indications that Jimmy Johnson wants to
take a long look at Hand for a possible starting position, because of
his size and athleticism. With Gardener also getting a look at
defensive end, a possible starting defensive line for 1996 could be
Cross (280 lbs), Hand (330 lbs), Bowens (310 lbs) and Gardener (320
lbs). This would yield an average weight of 310 lbs across the
defensive line.
Heller has always played more on guts than on talent. He was
a throwback who played through a variety of injuries with toughness
and intensity. But it appears that his time may be coming to an end.
