Dolphins News: Byars Is Back...
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Mar 21, 1996: -- Byars Is Back... --
The Dolphins announced today that they had signed Fullback
Keith Byars to one-year contract for undisclosed terms. Byars was
released from the team in February to make room under the salary cap.
Byars started all 16 games at fullback last season for the
Dolphins, catching 51 passes for 362 yards and 2 TDs. He also rushed
15 times for 44 yards and 1 TD.
Last season, Keith Byars was coming off of extensive knee
surgery and didn't have as good a year as he'd had in the 1993, when
he made the Pro-Bowl as a fullback. In his 10 year career, Byars has
played in 146 games with 134 starts. He has caught 532 passes for
4925 yards and 22 TDs and rushed 848 times for 3049 yards and 23 TDs.
Keith Byars was also the man who caught Dan Marino's record
setting 343rd touchdown that broke Fran Tarkenton's record for most
touchdown passes in a career.
Also in the news, Keith Sims had successful surgery on his toe
to correct a problem that plagued him most of last season. He is
expected to recover in time for training camp.
My Comments:
This is a good move for the Dolphins. Up until his injury a
year and a half ago, Byars has been an integral part of the Dolphins'
offense. His ability to catch passes and break tackles for additional
yardage make him an extremely dangerous receiver coming out of the
backfield.
