Dolphins News: Johnson To Meet Huizenga Today
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Jan 10, 1996: -- Johnson To Meet Huizenga Today --
Jimmy Johnson is scheduled to meet with Dolphins' owner Wayne
Huizenga today to interview for the job of head coach of the Miami
Dolphins. Johnson was originally scheduled to talk to Huizenga
yesterday, but Huizenga was sick with the flu.
The reports out of Miami say that representatives of Johnson
and Huizenga have been meeting since Monday in an attempt to work out
a deal by the end of the week.
Huizenga himself confirmed that Jimmy Johnson was his first
choice for head coach of the team earlier this week and has further
stated that he'd like to get a new coach signed as soon as possible to
begin the process of rebuilding the team.
Team representatives are being very circumspect in discussing
the situation, but have confirmed that talks between the Dolphins and
Jimmy Johnson are ongoing.
My Comments:
This is just the natural progression of negotiations between
Johnson and the Dolphins.
About the only thing that I find surprising in this situation
is Johnson's assertion that, if he becomes the head coach of the
Dolphins, he will need to meet with Don Shula and discuss the future
of the team.
It remains to be seen if this is a sincere statement or just a
ploy to ease his hiring. I suspect that he's sincere - Johnson is not
so stupid as to believe that he can't learn anything from Shula,
despite his ego.
