Dolphins News: Mitchell Signs
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Jul 16, 1995: -- Mitchell Signs --
The news media is reporting that the Dolphins have signed their
fourth round draft pick, TE Pete Mitchell of Boston College to a 3
year deal for undisclosed terms.
Mitchell set a Boston College record with 190 receptions for 2338
yards and 20 touchdowns during his 4 years in college. He will most
likely act as the team's long-snapper as well as backing up Eric
Green at tight end.
Mitchell's signing leaves the Dolphins with only one unsigned
draft choice - first round pick Billy Milner.
Also in the news, Bert Weidner signed the contract that he had
agreed to earlier in the week. Official terms were not disclosed, but
the deal is reported to be for 2 years at the league minimum, with
incentives that could bring it up to $1.6 million, depending on
playing time.
My Comments:
As I've said before, the salary cap makes signing draft choices
easier than it has been in the past. It's good to see Mitchell get
signed before training camp opens, as he is almost certain to make the
roster as the long-snapper and will probably see some use in the
complicated pass offense of the Dolphins.
The signing of Weidner gives the team depth and experience at
both the guard and center positions and is a positive move.
The biggest concern with training camp right around the corner is
the fact that Billy Milner is still unsigned.
