Dolphins' News: Gray, McGwire, 18 others signed

*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***

Apr 25, 1995: -- Gray, McGwire, 18 others signed --

The Dolphins signed guard Chris Gray to a 3 year contract on Monday, along with former Seattle Seahawk Dan McGwire. Gray, who started one game for the Dolphins last season when Bert Weidner was injured was an "exclusive rights" free agent.

Dan McGwire, a former first round draft choice of the Seahawks in 1991, played in seven games last season, starting three. He completed 51 passes in 105 attempts for 578 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. That works out to a passer rating of 60.7.

In addition to McGwire and Gray, the Dolphins released former Browns QB Todd Philcox and signed the following rookie free agents:

	RB's Lee McClinton
      	      Kirby Dar Dar
              Michael Davis
	WR Randy Gatewood
	TE Joe Planansky
	OT Seth Dittman
	OG Dave Hack
              Gary Needham
	C Jason James
	DE Steve Perksins
	LB's Travis Cooper
              Ed Hawthorne
              John Meredith
	DB's Melvin Crawford
              Maurice Glenn
              Deon Johnson
              Kwame Smith
        P Jason Bender

My Comments:

I am encouraged to see all of these moves. There has been some talk of Gray becoming the starting right guard this season and he certainly has as good a shot at it as anyone on the roster.

By the way, I still have Weidner listed as an unrestricted free agent. It's interesting that Gray was signed first. This may be an indication of the progress of his injury.

McGwire may be regarded as one of the great draft busts of all times, being picked 16th overall in 1991. Still, if it gets to the point where we have to use him, he's probably as good as we're going to get for the third string.

I think the signing of a lot of rookie free agents is a particularly good sign. Irving Spikes was one of those free agents last year as was Bernie Parmalee in his rookie season. The more free agents we sign, the more likely it is that we'll find a sleeper like Spikes that can really make a difference.
