Dolphins' News: Singleton signed; Ingram traded

*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***

Mar 21, 1995: -- Singleton signed; Ingram traded --

The Dolphins announced today that they have signed linebacker Chris Singleton to a 5 year contract, reportedly worth about $5.75 million. They have also announced the signing of running back Irving Spikes to a 2 year deal and tight end Ronnie Williams to a 3 year deal.

Last year, Singleton started in 11 games before his season ending ankle injury. Nevertheless, he managed to come out 4th on the team in tackles behind Cox, Stewart and Atkins. He had 75 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 sacks and one pass defensed.

Spikes played in 12 games last year and finished second on the team in rushing yardage behind Bernie Parmalee. He had 312 yards on 70 carries for a 4.5 yard/carry average. He also rushed for 2 touchdowns.

Also in the news, Mark Ingram was traded to the Green Bay Packers for a 4th round draft pick in the 1995 draft. The trade of Ingram frees up around $900,000 against the salary cap.

In the rumor department, the Dolphins are reportedly discussing another trade with the Packers that would send Keith Jackson to Green Bay for Terrel Buckley.

My Comments:

The signing of Singleton is one of the things that had to happen in order to keep the defense reasonably whole for next year. As our second best linebacker, he's an important asset to the team and, IMHO, he played very well last season.

The reason that he's so much better in Miami than he was in New England, was that New England moved him to inside linebacker when he should have been playing outside.

The signing of Spikes was a foregone conclusion, but it's good to see, nonetheless.

The Ingram trade also surprised no one, but I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get a higher draft pick for him.

But more than that, I was very surprised by the attitude that Ingram developed last season. It seemed to be very out of character for him to turn into a whining, complaining prima-donna and I am at a loss to explain it.

Keith Jackson is reportedly very upset over the signing of Eric Green and the possibility of a trade. He supposedly said that he would retire before he would play for another team. It will be interesting to see how that situation develops.
