Dolphins' News: Eric Green Visits Dolphins
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Feb 22, 1995: -- Eric Green Visits Dolphins --
Tight End Eric Green, an unrestricted free agent from the
Pittsburgh Steelers, visited Miami on Tuesday and is apparently
talking with the Dolphins about joining the team. Green made the Pro
Bowl each of the last two years as a reserve and the Steelers recently
removed his franchise designation.
This past season, Green lead the Steelers in receiving yardage
with 618 and was second in receptions with 46. He also caught 4
touchdown passes. However, according to the AP report, Green did not
actually work out for the coaches.
Also visiting Miami was free agent receiver Randal Hill of the
Phoenix Cardinals. You may remember Hill as the Dolphins' first round
draft pick of 1991. Last season, Hill was fourth in receptions and
yardage on the Cardinals, catching 38 passes for 544 yards and no
touchdowns.
The Dolphins signed veteran quarterback Todd Philcox as
the third string quarterback yesterday as a replacement for Doug
Pederson, who was lost in the expansion draft to the Carolina
Panthers. Philcox used to back up Bernie Kosar in Cleveland, but was
waived by the Browns last summer.
The Dolphins also signed cornerback Calvin Jackson, who was a
member of the practice squad for 1994.
My Comments:
Eric Green would be a fine addition to the Dolphins, if they could
keep him and Keith Jackson both happy and productive. I'm not sure
that that's possible, but it may be revealing that Green didn't work
out for the Dolphins when he visited and he is visiting at least 2
other teams before he makes a decision.
It also raises the possibility that Keith Jackson may be waived or
traded if Green is signed. I wonder if his laterals and dropped
passes are coming back to haunt him.
I think that the visit by Randal Hill is very funny. It may be
that Hill realizes how good he could have had it, if he had had a
better attitude back in 1991. Playing for the Cards under Buddy Ryan
must have been a real eye-opener for him.
I wouldn't be surprised if Kosar had something to do with the
signing of Philcox. Having Philcox is probably an asset, but it
really doesn't make much difference in the long run.
