*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Aug 31, 1999: -- Roster Cuts --

The Dolphins announced a series of roster cuts today to bring the team roster down to 70 players. The normal roster requirement for today is 65 players, but the Dolphins still have a 5 man roster exemption for the players they sent to NFL Europe.

The Dolphins waived RB Juan Johnson, TE Frank Leatherwood, CB Emmanuel McDaniel, G O'Lester Pope, G Mike Sheldon and LB Derik Stevenson. They also waived DT Dwayne Robinson after reaching an injury settlement with him.

The team placed OT Joe Wong and WR Robert Baker on injured reserve and put LB Sammie Burroughs on the Physically-Unable-To-Perform (PUP) list. Wong and Baker are now ineligible to return this year, but Burroughs can stay on the PUP list up until the 6th week of the regular season.

In order to bolster their injured receiving corps. the Dolphins claimed WR Kevin McKenzie off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles. McKenzie was a rookie free agent signee of the 49ers and spent most of last year on their practice squad. He was signed off the 49ers' practice squad by the Eagles at the end of the season and played in two games for them, catching 1 pass for 8 yards.

Right now, because Richmond Webb is not signed, he does not count towards the Dolphins roster limit, even though you will find him listed on most rosters.

My Comments:

There are no real surprises in this list of cuts, except perhaps Mike Sheldon, who has been with the team for several years as a backup. He even got a start last year after Kevin Donnalley was injured.

The signing of Kevin McKenzie is a little bit of a surprise, but I doubt he'll last a full week, let alone make the 53 man roster.
