Mar 11, 1998: -- George Teague Waived --
The Dolphins announced today that they have released safety
George Teague. Teague was signed last spring as an unrestricted free
agent to help out at the safety position, but with the emergence of
Calvin Jackson and the signing of Brock Marion, Teague has become
expendable.
Teague started at free safety in 6 games for the Dolphins last
year, replacing Corey Harris after the first New York Jets game and
losing his starting spot to Calvin Jackson in the first Patriots'
game. When Sam Madison was slightly injured and Jackson moved back to
cornerback in the Detroit game, Teague got his last start.
All together, Teague had 44 total tackles in 1997, 2
interceptions, 1 forced fumble and 3 passes defensed.
My Comments:
This move comes as something of a surprise to me. Without
exact numbers, it's hard to tell, but I think that it will free up
between $600,000 and $700,000 in salary cap space.
But the Dolphins are not hurting for salary cap space at the
present time and the release of an experienced backup will hurt the
team on the depth chart.
And, you have to ask whether or not it would be a better idea
to release Corey Harris. His contract is bigger and that would save
more under the cap. I also felt that Teague played better than Harris
last year, but without detailed film study, that is difficult to
tell.
I can only surmise that JJ has decided that Corey Harris can
play cornerback and therefore is useful, while Teague is not. Or
perhaps he's trying to save some money to try and sign Gilbert and
Bowens. Or both.
Unfortunately, we will probably never know for sure.
