Nov 08, 1996: -- Fred Barnett Will Start --

DOLPHINS NEWS:

The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that wide receiver Fred Barnett will make his first start of the season this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. Barnett, who was signed as a free agent in the spring by the Dolphins, was injured in training camp and has only played in one game since returning from injury two weeks ago.

Randal Hill, who was starting at the position that Barnett will now occupy, will be the designated third wide receiver for the team.

In other news, the Dolphins announced on Wednesday that they have come to a settlement with former Dolphins tight end Eric Green. The Dolphins will pay Green $200,000 to settle the injury grievance that Green had filed against the team after they cut him before training camp. The settlement will free up about $500,000 in salary cap money that had been frozen awaiting the outcome of the grievance.

In addition to the settlement, Green's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has said that Green is still interested in playing in Miami after his contract with the Ravens is up at the end of this season.

And last, but not least, Jeff Cross is aiming to be back in time to play against the Houston Oilers on November 17th. However, his back is still bothering him and his schedule may be a little too ambitious.

My Comments:

I was pleased to read that JJ has been having McDuffie, Barnett and Hill get most of the work at wide receiver this week with Marino and the first team. The reason for this is that he apparently believes, as I do, that the timing between Marino and his starters needs to be a lot better.

JJ also has said that Barnett has regained his quickness and is practicing back up to form this week. This is good news, since JJ left Barnett on the inactive list last week against New England, because he had "heavy legs".

This will be the first time this year that Marino has had his complete first team available in a game. It will be very important for this group to work well together this weekend if the Dolphins are to make a run at the playoffs.

As far as Green is concerned, I'd rather see the Dolphins bring back Sammie Smith than sign Eric Green. You see, Smith is in jail and if they signed him, he wouldn't be able to bring his attitude back to the team.
