Dolphins News: Emtman visits Dolphins

*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***

Jul 19, 1995: -- Emtman visits Dolphins --

According to published news reports and reliable sources in Miami, former Colts defensive lineman Steve Emtman is visiting the Miami Dolphins this afternoon after being waived by the Colts earlier in the week.

The first overall draft pick of the 1992 draft, Emtman has suffered from a variety of injury problems during his three year career, only getting to play in 18 games in that time.

Emtman, who is listed as 6'4" and 300lbs, was let go by the Colts because of disagreements on his salary. The Colts wanted to restructure it to reduce the impact of his $3 million paycheck on their salary cap this year.

Reports say that the Dolphins are very interested in Emtman and will try hard to get him to sign with them.

My Comments:

I have mixed feelings about Emtman. On the one hand, he had a great college career and is apparently a terrific athlete. He has a lot of potential that has not been tapped.

On the other hand, playing an average of 6 games per season due to injuries is not exactly a stellar record. Plus, Emtman is listed as a defensive end on the Colts roster and the Dolphins have three potential starting defensive ends.

Now, my understanding is that Emtman was a defensive tackle in college and the Dolphins could certainly use a good backup defensive tackle. But how much will Emtman want to sign with a team? Can the Dolphins get him for a small contract with a lot of incentives? Is he really necessary?

I guess that I figure if the Dolphins can get him for a bargain price, maybe they should take him. But they shouldn't spend a lot of money on him.
