TODAY'S SUMMARY:
The Dolphins continued their training camp regimen with a
single, full-contact workout on Wednesday afternoon, having taken the
morning off - at least from the practice field. LB Zach Thomas
commented that the pace of training camp is better this year - he has
said that Coach Cameron is allowing the team more time to recover
between full hitting workouts.
The practice itself started out with the same offensive line
that has been featured since day 1. Drew Mormino and Anthony Alabi
continue at right guard and right tackle on the starting line. Both
players are getting heavily schooled by the defense at those positions
and did not look good on Wednesday. According to one report, Alabi
looks out of shape and slow, while Mormino was blown off the line by
both Matt Roth and Akbar Gbaja-Bimila.
At QB, Cleo Lemon took the majority of snaps with the starting
offense and looked better than Trent Green. He hit PK Sam with a
perfectly placed touch pass at the back of the endzone for a touchdown
and Justin Peele on a deep post pattern for what would have been a big
gain.
Green, for his part, continued to make risky throws into tight
coverage and was rewarded with two interceptions and another pass that
was dropped by the defensive back. However, both Coach Cameron and
Trent Green have defended his play, saying that they are taking more
chances now than they would in a regular game because training camp is
the place to work out the problems.
But Green did have some good moments in practice, hitting
Chris Chambers with a 60 yard bomb down the right sideline that was
perfectly placed. He also had a 20 yard touchdown completion to
Courtney Anderson.
John Beck continues to do well, improving a little each day.
However, he's not ready to move up the depth chart.
There hasn't been much reported about Ronnie Brown's
performance, other than he has been worked very hard so far this
year. Coach Cameron's offense likes to feature the main running back
and Ronnie Brown is bearing the load. His main backup Jesse Chatman
is getting good reports from onlookers.
At receiver, the usual suspects continued to make plays with
David Sutton and PK Sam getting compliments from onlookers. It looks
like the Dolphins have a good crop of new receivers and the final cuts
at that position will be tough.
On defense, Travis Daniels had some good plays and is
impressing most onlookers with his continued improvement now that his
ankle is healed. As for Jason Allen, he managed to break up a pass to
Ted Ginn when Allen slipped and fell. However, in his fall, he
managed to disrupt the route enough that Ginn was forced out of
bounds. The Miami Herald said that he got the job done "in an
Inspector Clouseau kind of way".
Joey Porter, who has been pretty quiet so far, blew up at
least two plays on Wednesday, getting into the backfield to knock
Ronnie Brown for a loss on one play and getting to the quarterback for
a sack on the next.
And Zach Thomas provided a little fun for onlookers as he
attempted a drop-kick as the request of Coach Cameron. Apparently,
the ball went only about 10 yards, but at least everyone watching got
a laugh out of it.
ROSTER BATTLES:
There was nothing exceptional that happened on Wednesday to
change the current situation on the depth chart. Cleo Lemon continues
to slightly out-perform Trent Green, but Green and Cameron's comments
about the situation seemed to bear out the idea that Green is still
the favored starter. Lemon was just getting a little extra practice
with the first team.
If reports about Mormino and Alabi are accurate, their
continued presence on the starting line is head-scratching, to say the
least. Unfortunately, no one has reported anything about Hadnot and
Shelton, so it's difficult to make a comparison.
ROSTER MOVES:
None reported yesterday.
INJURY REPORT:
Andrew Goodman and Joe Toledo continue to ride the bikes and
do stretching exercises. Wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim did not
participate in practice and looks to have a minor injury to his leg or
ankle.
EYEWITNESS REPORTS:
Other than the regular media reports, there are no fan
eyewitness reports today.

My Comments:
The offensive line mystery continues and gets stranger by the
day. I don't think we're going to know whether or not Coach Cameron
is serious about keeping Mormino and Alabi on the starting line until
the second or third pre-season game.
The defensive backs continue to show improvement over last
year, especially Travis Daniels. The only problem is that they
reportedly are having trouble catching the ball. While that is not
the most important attribute of a good defensive back, it sure would
be nice to see the secondary get a few more interceptions this year.
Coach Cameron and Trent Green's comments on the number of
interceptions being thrown make me feel a little better about the
situation, but it's still not comforting to hear that Trent Green is
forcing the ball into coverage. Habits tend to persist and while
Green is a seasoned veteran, the mindset he develops now will effect
him throughout the season.
Still, I don't think it's worth getting worried about - yet.
