KEY MATCHUPS:
- The Dolphins vs Themselves:
In their first meeting, the
Dolphins made very few mistakes and dominated in the trenches. Last
week, however, the team fell apart in all phases of the game in the
second half. The Dolphins must get past last week's debacle mentally
if they want to beat the Jets.
- Braylon Edwards vs Vontae Davis:
Edwards caught a lot of
passes in the first game, but not many since then. Davis is making
his first start at cornerback. Unfortunately, he has had a rough time
in coverage this year.
- Dan Henning vs Rex Ryan:
In the last game, Henning's
gameplan blew out Ryan's strategy. Ryan will undoubtedly make some
adjustments, as will Henning, but Ryan no longer has Kris Jenkins in
the middle.
- Dolphins' blockers vs Jets' Linebackers:
The key to
stopping the Wildcat is not so much the play of the defensive line,
but more the aggressiveness of the linebackers and safeties. The
Dolphins' blockers must be able to counter aggressive moves by the
defense's linebackers and safeties.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Ted Ginn,Jr is obviously the player who is most on the spot
for Miami this week, but he's not the only one. The offensive line
has to do a better job controlling the line of scrimmage and it looks
like Brian Hartline will get a chance to prove he should be the
starter.
On the other side of the ball, Vontae Davis will undoubtedly
be a prime target of the Jets and he must show he can cover Braylon
Edwards better than he did in the first game. Channing Crowder is
injured and we don't know yet whether he'll play, so Reggie Torbor
could start. Jason Taylor is not on the injury report and played very
well against the Saints until he was injured, but we still need to see
more out of Joey Porter and Cameron Wake.
Thomas Jones and rookie Shonn Greene have been the primary
forces in the Jets' running game now that Leon Washington is out and
have done an excellent job. On the other hand, QB Mark Sanchez has
fallen back to earth after his hot start and has thrown 8 picks in the
last 4 games. WR Braylon Edwards, who torched Miami in the first
meeting, has also fallen, catching just 4 passes in the last 2 games
On defense, linebackers David Harris and Bart Scott lead the
team in tackles, but pro-bowl nose tackle Kris Jenkins is out for the
year and journeyman Sione Pouha is taking his place. Pouha could
probably start elsewhere in the NFL, but is not the force that Jenkins
is. Darrelle Revis is the Jets' premier cornerback while Linebacker
Calvin Pace makes a lot of noise, but is not especially productive.
Leon Washington was an excellent return man for the Jets, but
is out for the season.
MY ANALYSIS:
The first game between the Dolphins and Jets this year was a
very exciting game that came down to the final possession. With only
three weeks between games and Miami having a bye week, there is not
much that is new for either team to look at, so you can probably
expect about the same gameplan from both teams as happened in the
first meeting.
Like last time, the Dolphins will rely on the Wildcat to set
up the rest of their offense. And since Chad Henne has replaced Chad
Pennington as the starter, Miami has been averaging 34.3 points per
game, which puts them near the top of the NFL in scoring.
Certainly, Rex Ryan will make some changes to his defense in
hopes of stopping the Wildcat and forcing Henne to beat them.
However, with Kris Jenkins no longer anchoring their defensive line,
it seems unlikely that the Jets, with the 22nd ranked run defense in
the league, will have any more success stopping the Wildcat this time
than they did last time.
But even when the Dolphins pass, they should be able to move
the ball. The Jets' pass rush is overrated - they are 31st in the NFL
in the number of sacks they've managed to get and without Jenkins,
that number is not likely to improve. Yes, they have an excellent
secondary, but without a good pass rush, even the best defensive backs
can't cover forever.
It seems likely to me that Miami's starting lineup on offense
at the beginning of the game will be two backs, two tight ends and
only one wide receiver. And that wide receiver will probably be
either Camarillo or Hartline. Ted Ginn will see plenty of action in
this game, but I doubt he will be a go-to guy in any crucial
situations.
Overall, Miami's offense may have a hard time getting started,
because the Jets will be fired up, but I think they will have success
in this game.
The last two games, the Jets have been running the ball very
well against two of the worst teams in the NFL. Mark Sanchez' role
has been scaled back significantly after his disastrous performance
in Buffalo and last week, when the Jets crushed the Raiders, Sanchez
only threw 15 passes. The Jets would undoubtedly like to continue
that kind of performance and will attack Miami with the running game.
However, the Dolphins are not the Raiders or Bills, so I don't
think that the Jets will have as much success running the ball as they
have the last two weeks. The Raiders are 30th against the run, while
the Bills are last in the league. Thomas Jones only averaged 3.2 yards
per carry against Miami and there is nothing significantly different
about either team to make me think that he will do a lot better in
this game.
Jets' rookie Shonn Greene had an outstanding game against the
Raiders, but again, the Dolphins, with their 4th ranked run defense,
are not the Raiders and the Jets are without Leon Washington this
week. Washington has always been very dangerous against the Dolphins
and his absence will be missed by New York.
The more difficult question is how will the Dolphins do when
defending the pass. Braylon Edwards had an amazing game against the
Dolphins last time, but has only caught 4 passes in the two weeks
since that game. Jericho Cotchery may be back to full speed, but with
Sanchez struggling, it seems unlikely the Jets will take a lot of
chances downfield.
However, the Jets will definitely test Vontae Davis early and
often in this game and that concerns me. Davis is not nearly as good
at coverage as Sean Smith is at this point, and that could mean some
big plays for the Jets.
On special teams, the Jets pulled a couple of sneaky plays
last time, but the Dolphins will be more alert to them this week.
Ultimately, I think that this game will be like the last one.
The two teams will stay close and the team that makes the fewest
mistakes will be the winner, probably scoring the winning touchdown
late in the game.
